in obedience exercises it can be somewhat hard to recognize natural temper in brief observation.
need a time and different scenarios.
in applied work such like tracking, guarding, active protection for experienced observer it's quite easy to see true dog's potential.

xpyro, it is quite simple, generally I test dogs BEFORE they are trained, and if suitable, they will be trained,

IPO and KNPV dogs etc are tested/evaluated after 2 or more years of training, so most of what you are looking at is traininglabour, if you want to properly evaluate these dogs you have to take them out of their comfort zone, out of their trained program and off of their sportfield

there is one famous dog where his qualities are shown in a video, where the dog is 6 years or so, and biting on its owner, so what can we really learn from such video, about nothing for me, also not saying the dog is not a good dog, just impossible to tell from such video or exercise

I think duke said it best when he said both are difficult because both require genes.

that's why so many serious working folks do not put a premium on V rated structure and so many SL people are not producing many dogs capable of LE/MIL or even serious PPD. and there are some breeders who have the knack, not many I know of.

the "jack of all trades" dog was over when the proofing became fake.

jmo,
Rik

Well said.

Every post I see that laments the demise of the true working GSD makes me realize how lucky I am to have my dog.

Thank you.

@sunsilver... I really like that quote from Alfred Hahn. Clears a lot things for me. Thanks!
@Duke I like the explanation why working breeders hardly pay much attention to V ratings and show breeders don't put attention to serious working character. It's hard to be a jack of all trades.
Thanks everyone for the clarification.
