xpyro, pike is a 5-5 on fero, which means about nothing in linebreeding, and if you think to recognize a furmula in that breeding, how would that formula benefit you in your choice of male for the female you have for breeding today

I'm not going to offer any advice on how to reach your goal on working dogs. I would just be someone else here trying to "fake" it.

I am going to suggest that you do all the research you can on Stefan Schaub and Staatsmacht Kennels and how he did it. a google turns up info everywhere that he gives out freely.

Also, Duke does have some real world advice in LE/Mil dogs.

I will say that the only thing I have learned about breeding is that breed a good dog to a good female and sometimes you get a good offspring. and by good, I apply that to any endeavor you choose.

jmo,
Rik

edit to add: I did not read one post  before I replied. that is because I understand there would be much stupid si#t that somehow some qualities of the ancestor means more than the qualities of the sire and dam and the qualities evident in the individual offspring. that old "3-2. sire of the sire is grandsire of the dam" is bullshit.

What does one do with the puppies that are considered trash? and what makes them to be considered garbage?

Hired Dog

by Hired Dog on 02 September 2020 - 15:09

Stephanie, that depends on what one considers trash. If one is looking for a show dog and the dog in front of them is not show quality, they will most likely get rid it.
If one is looking for a working dog and the dog in front of them is not doing it, same thing. Now days most people find a pet home and sell/give the dog away.
I have "washed" dogs out before that could not do the job I wanted them to. I will tell you this, its not fun raising a puppy for a year or two to find out that its not turning out the way you want it to.
"Garbage" for me would be a dog with nerve issues, fear biters, environmentally unstable, spooks, I do not have the temperament to deal with those.

Oh gosh that would be frustrating for me also. I wouldn't want any of these traits either that you listed below. Those are traits of a Chihuahua 😅 I have one. My Shepard's think it's there pet. They seem to like little dog's. Thank you for helping me understand the lingo on the undesirables.

Thanks, i will go and study how the Staatsmacht Kennels do their breeding. 5-5 Linebreeding is a bit to far away to make an actual difference, perhaps i was just cluching a straws.

@Rik you misunderstood what i was saying i never said that the parents are less improtant than the ancestors but rtaher if you linebreed on a particular ancestor you can increase your chances of obtaining a desired gene.

Is the 3-2 linebreeding thing useless?

Rik

by Rik on 02 September 2020 - 16:09

xpyro, the 3/2 reference is from a book written by a showline breeder on how to breed. I should not have taken for granted everyone understood what I was saying.

no breeding is useless if it produces the intended results. also, imo, line breeding can be useful or useless. that is where the dogs and the experience of the breeder comes in. 2 very poor dogs can have the same ancestors as 2 very good dogs.

good luck and hope you reach your goals.

Rick
isn't Staatsmacht mainly specialized in field of sport utilization of dogs?

by hexe on 03 September 2020 - 04:09

I'm nobody, and I don't breed dogs for a multitude of reasons, but from my observations over the years of my interest in dogs, regardless of breed, I've come to this conclusion:

Great bloodlines can be built on the father line; great legacies are most often built on the mother line.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Hexe, how do you have a 'legacy' without a decent bloodline ? Don't understand what you mean. Okay you could have one outstanding dog that was a complete crapshoot, or well outcrossed, or a total mongrel, that could become a 'legend in its own lifetime' because of something that dog did, or was; but is that really a legacy, doesn't a legacy need to have some element of continuing on into future generations ? (I.e. somethng beyond the one female passing something on to her son / daughter.)  Surely in those terms the input of both male and female parents would have to count every time ?
