Trying to think outside the box here due to border crossing and distance issues. Please be kind if this is stupid.

IF AI for a maiden bitch is sometimes less effective than for experienced bitches, could this be overcome using a dog with a vasectomy (proven zero sperm) plus the AI?

Could this create any registration issues? Would DNA be required/good idea?

Thank you.

I have used AI for maiden and proven with no noticeable difference in how many of either got pregnant.

See no point in using the male.

Thank you.

This really does open up some wonderful possibilities.

Hmmm ... if you have a neutered dog (zero sperm count) your bitch knows and is relaxed with, and if you know he will actually copulate with her if allowed to do so, why not let him 'break her in' ? As distinct from the AI being used.

You will be able to be sure she is ready if she allows him; it will get over her 'doing it for the first time' if she has any reticence about it; she will 'stand' more than once; the AI ought to be a bit easier to administer. Theoretically at least a win-win all round.

Won't be likely to make a jot of difference to whether she 'takes' or not, but at least everybody gets something out of it. ;-) ;-) ;-) Never known anyone do this DELIBERATELY before (not being familiar with AI use) ... but if you draw a parallel with 'teaser' stallions during horse breeding ?? [Would sure beat some of the more brutal methods sometimes used to keep a bitch standing still to ensure a mating tie / administer to her.]

Would recommend (identifying) DNA in any case, as a matter of course.

Fascinating question, GSCat.

Thank you, Hundmutter.

Of course another issue is finding a vasectomized GSD, or at least a similar sized vasectomized dog. Or maybe paying for the surgery for a dog that's going to be neutered anyway in return for *services*

. . . and making sure the potential *friend* doesn't have doggy VD.

Just do the AI. The rest of it is just really weird.

GSCat, I wrote another post that apparently did not embed properly, since it disappeared !

In which I said that :

Many breeders test both partners for bugs before they mate them;

& that if you didn't already have a vasectomised dog on hand, it became academic.

I think if you have to introduce a strange dog, then that would be a bit weird.

Thank you, Hundmutter and jillmissal.
