Can we still import a dog into the USA during COVID? - Page 2

Mprimm that is very costly and with shipping cost unless is it a bloodline that you cannot get here in the US not worth it.  I would either wait or look in the states or advertise what you want and see if anyone has what you want.

I bought two pups just a little while ago they were nice and good pedigrees $1100 each plus shipping  After that I bought a pup for a friend a long coat female $900 

You have to remember that foreign breeders see the prices that puppies are sold for here and want some of that money so are raising their prices.

On the other hand with the airlines raising their prices so high many breeders are not able to sell their pups as fast so some are lowering their price to make a sale.

2000 for an imported pup + 1000+ shipping (to US) seems insane to me.

2000 is about par for the course from top U.S. breeders and another 1000 will pay for a few in person looks for a lot of folks. that's the best way to get a dog is to see it in up close.

the best kept secret and most ignored is the number of top quality pups bred by club
members all across the U.S. no hype, no flash, just solid dogs that no one ever hears about because most go to pet homes.

if there is a club near you, get involved. you will be surprised at the dogs flying under the radar.

FWIW my top female was imported from Belgium before the pandemic, shipping was 1800 euro/ $2100USD.

Absolutely 100% worth it for really good european dogs. Not many really nice Mals bred in North America at the moment.

I'm about to pay 1600 euro for shipping of a puppy, which is indeed higher than normal but, again, worth it.

I have worked with the local clubs which are mostly working line dogs. In my area there are few show line breeders and they breed untitled dogs. The closest really good show line breeder that I know of charges $3,500 for a puppy and is located about six hours away.

jill, you obviously know what you want, who you are dealing with and how to get it. so that takes a lot of the negatives out of importing.

how many people researching on this site do you think are that advanced? I think not many. hence my suggestions for folks in the U.S.

mprimm, a SL that cannot place in show is a pet. not to say they cannot be very good pets, but people paying 3500 for something they have no idea can win or not are just sheep for the shearing. I wouldn't give 200 for a SL that could not do well and I know the difference, well, I wouldn't bring it home for free.

@rik yes very true, and same for purchasing from any North American breeder. People are paying SO MUCH MONEY for domestically bred dogs that...may or may not be worth it. Because they just don't know, as you said, what they want or how to get it.

jill, I think everyone who chooses a dog venue, whatever, has to go through a learning process, unless they were born into it.

I certainly did. it was very time consuming and costly.

I agree Rik very costly if you don't have a mentor. The members of this board can/should be helpful and not negative when others ask questions or ask for help.
