K9 Dax joined the Lake County Sheriff’s Office in the spring of 2015. K9 Dax was 13 months old when he joined the team. As the Lake County community has followed over the years, K9 Dax has thrived in his role as a police canine. K9 Dax and his partner, Deputy John Forlenza, have located over 400 missing endangered people or fleeing felons. He has hundreds of kilos of illegal drugs, millions of dollars seized, dozens of firearms discarded by offenders, dozens of seized vehicles, and has participated in hundreds of community and school demonstrations.
K9 Dax has received awards for:

2016 Illinois House of Representatives – General Assembly Award
2017 ASIS International (Illinois North Shore Chapter) – Law Enforcement Officer of the Year
2017 Chicago Crime Commission – Paws of Distinction Award
2018 K9s of Valor Foundation – K9 of the Year
2019 Lake County Board Special Recognition
2019 The 100 Club of Chicago – Valor Award

On March 3, 2024, K9 Dax was injured while apprehending a person who had committed several felonies, and was fleeing. K9 Dax injured his neck and spine, which resulted in temporary paralysis to his hindquarters. K9 Dax was subsequently diagnosed with cervical and thoracolumbar Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) and lumbosacral IVDD exasperated during his apprehension on March 3rd. K9 Dax went through intensive physical therapy following the injury, allowing him to regain the ability to walk and use his hind legs.
K9 Dax’s team of veterinarians determined that, for his physical wellbeing, he would not be able to return to active duty.
Sheriff John D. Idleburg has accepted K9 Dax’s official retirement request from Deputy Forlenza and ordered him to be turned over to Deputy John Forlenza, to enjoy his retirement. K9 Dax will undoubtedly miss going to work every day but will enjoy relaxing with Deputy Forlenza and his family.
Deputy John Forlenza said, “There is no way to quantify or properly express what Dax’s service has meant to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the Lake County community, his supporters across the nation, and especially me. But I cannot refrain from stating that his service has been exemplary, and most importantly, he has saved countless lives, including my own. I am proud to have been his handler and best friend for the last nine years. Dax is a true hero and well deserving of the rest and love that waits for him in his retirement. I’d like to especially thank Dax’s supporters, team of veterinarians, trainers, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, and my family and friends for all their support throughout his career.”
Sheriff John D. Idleburg said, “Deputy John Forlenza and K9 Dax exemplify what a true partnership looks like. They are among the top canine teams in the nation. There was virtually nothing K9 Dax couldn’t handle. He saved many lives throughout his career, apprehended some of the most violent offenders, and located major quantities of illegally trafficked drugs. On behalf of the men and women of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Lake County community, thank you, K9 Dax, for your dedication, your commitment, and your service to our community.”

Major Vaughn Collins is a loving and loyal German Shepherd. He has amazing ability to watch over his family and property. He is able to work endlessly on any given day. He has high energy. His mother Heidi Von Der Hughes is from a European background. His father is bread well also. Major would make a wonderful stud due to his good hip test. Contact owner for stud abilities.

I own this dog since he was a puppy from JINOPO Czech Republic. Up to 4 months old everything was well but then after 4 months old our dog started to limp on his front leg. We started to visit vet orthoped. We have visited 3 very experienced orthopeds here in the Czech Republic and all of them said that he has the worst displasia elbow. We have been through 2 surgeries. We are now waiting for another surgery.
The reason why I am posting this here is that I would like to know how the puppies from this litter are doing health-wise. 5 males and 3 females were born...

Thank you everyone for your time and I will be looking forward to hear from you.

I wanted to add that Hope recently passed away, today is 12/10/2023, Hope passed away yesterday on 12/09/2023. I have to admit that she was the best dog, I ever had. I have two working line german shepherds and even though they came from extremely good working lines on paper, Hope just understood and was able to mentally do things these dogs couldn't do. Hope knew when to tone it up or down. Even though she was my least expensive dog, I bought her in Mississippi in 2012 for $350, she was my best dog. That just goes to show you that spending thousands of dollars on a dog doesn't guarantee anything. I will admit that she wasn't as athletic as my other two working dogs, but she had an awesome bond with me as I had her since she was 6 weeks old.

If you are looking for a good quality dog, most people reading this will not be going to a national or world shutzhund competition, you should be looking for lines that will be a good family dog.

I have a young daughter (at the time I am writing this comment), and I was never afraid to leave Hope with her, obviously never alone together.

Hope also knew how to put the other dogs I have in there place, and to keep them in line, albeit she was a smaller dog, she just knew how to handle other dogs.

Again, if you look at her pedigree she was a mix of American show-lines, west german working lines, and true working lines. You are not going to win a beauty pageant or a shutzhund competition with this line, but you are getting a damn good dog. This dog will not destroy your property, won't go to the bathroom in your house, although she was aloof of strangers she knew when someone was friend or foe. She wouldn't run away, or attack other dogs, nor did I have to worry about her when I took her out in the public. She also didn't bark obsessively if there wasn't some type of clear danger, or a stranger outside the door. Trust me if you ever get a working dog you will know what I am talking about. Hope also would wait for me tirelessly at the end of the driveway until I got home, or she would stay up in the house until I came home.

Her favorite food was peanut butter, and steak. She didn't like going to the vet, but what dog does, however she would go with the vet technician when she had to.

Again, if you are looking for a well bred family dog that is a German shepherd I do recommend the lines that she came from.

I also got her at 6 weeks old, which I don't know if that was a good or bad thing, but it sure worked for me and Hope. She lived for almost 12 years, with little to no health problems, which should mean something to any potential future dog parent.

If anyone who reads this wants to know more about Hope and her temperament please leave a comment below and I will be sure to respond when I read your comment!

Thanks,

God bless you Hope!

Rio had the most pleasant disposition. He loved kids. Fantastic watch dog and if trained would have made a great guard dog. He weighed 120 lbs and was proportionate. His play drive for a ball was intense. He developed degenerative myelopathy and passed away one month shy of 10 years old.
