Hired Dog

by Hired Dog on 14 August 2013 - 13:08

PM, I am not aware of any that will get really involved in those aspects and that are in English. I know there was a book published several years a go on the breed by a former Dutch K9 handler, I have not read it, but, no, I have not seen any books in English that talk about the Malinois other then general stuff.

And what purpose would a non working dog like a dane have to add to the herder like a mal? I can understand the addition of pit bull type dogs of hardness and game. Collies for speed and intensity.
Maybe terrier like Airdale for size (creating the Lake's type coat) But dane? Where is that useful. And i'm not talking about todays mastiff danes but the older type danes. That looked like skinny mastiff, with barely any flews and tiny ears because those hound ears will not stand without cutting a lot of material off. I know some crazy things have been tried in the past, like crossing borzi with english setter to give a larger head to the setter. But the results were flighty dogs that would not retrieve. Worthless, they removed from the gene pool.
Still love to see a pix

Dane is something that was added by a few breeders MANY years ago to get size, mainly by the Dutch from what I know.  I suspect someone found a Dane that was working quality (they used to exist) and added it in to their program to get bigger dogs.

15-20 years ago there was a Dutch line Malinois that ended up in Rescue, he was an import that was purchased for detection work and didn't have the drive/tenacity levels they were looking for.  He looked like just a big, somewhat goofy/gangly Malinois, and then he'd stop and pose and you would swear you were looking at a Great Dane.  I'd say maybe 1 grandparent?

Hired Dog, yes.  If I look at some of NVBK and KNPV dogs, I can see a Great Dane, and German shepherd in some of them.  And the french ring dogs look different also, they are sleeker in body structure and looks more reactive, maybe a better guard dog if you are not in sports.  And the belgian ring dogs more bulky and calmer in disposition, more confident and looks powerful, like more suited as a  personal protection dog.  The KNPV is more varied in appearance like great dane, gsd, dutchie, and even pitbull (box head), and if they are to be used in the police/military operations, maybe they are more courageous generally and are ready to hurt, and get hurt.  Just my opinion, I am not really sure.

Must be this awful heat in florida because i don't see any mals with any size. Most are 45 for females and maybe 55 for a really big male???
There's a dutch "Shepherd" on the local police force.
In person this dog looks more like a mal then a dutchie. But they list him a a GSD. He is over 24" at the withers. He is a big male.

Fry, in the working dog world, Malinois and Dutch shepherds are often bred together. If it comes out stripped its a Dutch and fawn its a Malinois.
When you have a moment, take a look at the NVBK dogs in Belgium, there are some huge dogs in some of those lines.
Most handlers I know prefer smaller sized Malinois because a 90 pound dog with that drive can be very hard to handle, but, trust me, they are out there, both in Holland and Belgium. That is a really nice looking dog in that picture, I hope he works as good as he looks.

yes they are often bred to each other, Malis and Dutchies and look the same in structure.  The mali looks like a dutchie without its stripe, and dutchie like a mali with stripes.  One of the earliest ancestor of Malinois, named Samlo was a brindle or striped dog.

Maybe the FL heat shrinks them LOL  I would consider 45 lbs to be on the smaller size for a female, and 55 to be a small male.  50-55 lbs IMO is an average female, 60+ is on the larger size.  And 65-70 is an average male with 80+ large.

I have 3 adult females at my house right now, they are 57, 62 and 65 lbs.  My 2 adult males are 85 and ??.  I haven't weighed Ares lately but I'd put him in the upper 60s or low 70s, he's not quite 2 and is still filling out.
