I am just wondering why some malinois have noticeably larger ears than others?  Is it an influence of great dane or maybe german shepherd in them?  Show lines have smaller ears than working/sport lines, with some exceptions.

I don't know the answer to that, but I keep seeing this Malinois puppy in the ads, and I can't help think how adorable it is, big ears and all!  Regular Smile

In my experience of 30 yrs, in GSDs the showlines have much taller/bigger ears than working lines, JMO

Because historically working line dogs have not been bred for traits that are strictly cosmetics like ear size, set and shape.  You will find a wide range of ear sizes and sets in working dogs from small high set ears to big ears that stick out sideways.

Add to that some of the very influential stud dogs in working Malinois history had big ears, and it's a trait you see on a regular basis.

I'm pretty damn sure there is not great dane blood in any male lines. Because no one had huge dopy, floppy eared, lippy mals. Least none that i've ever seen. Mals seem more consistent in conformation they say Border collies. Who have erect ears, folded, tipped, rose and airplane type ears.  Honestly until they went AKC no body cared about ears. Just could they work?
And show line mals in Florida tend to be very small. 45 lbs for a big female. And i've never seen one with bad ears. They are always very nicely erect.

Fry:
Agreed. No Great Dane in a Malinois!  Ears are just part of the breeding of a certain line. Some have larger ears than others. There is no showline or workline specific ear size.  Here's a photo of my boy. He's 14 months old. Ears are in proportion to his head.

Correction. Yes Great Danes in the back of MANY Malinois dog in Holland. There are many different breeds that were bred in the breed to add size, power, gameness, etc. If you look at some dogs in the KNPV 20 years a go and blur your eyes, you can swear you are looking at a Dane.
Working ability is what matters in working dogs, not ear sets and a Malinois IS first and foremost a working dog that needs to remain that way.

Hired Dog, I've never heard of a great dane being in the background. I am sure there are some cases though since sometimes in the beginning of breeds there can be some strange combinations. I found this link concerning the history of the breed, and I've never heard about the Great Dane mixture. Thank you for the information.

PM, what you have found is the history of the breed in general. It does not talk of breedings being made to improve certain traits for working purposes. Organizations like the KNPV and the NVBK could care less what a dog looks like, can it work is the real question?
Talk to people who have been into that aspect of the breed for many years, 30 plus, do some of your own research and see what you find, its very interesting. You are very welcome.
