http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/new-study-neuter-risk-hip-dysplasia-dogs/
I'm gonna try this again, i had it all typed out and the site went down. :(
The study was done mostly on Golden Retrivers.  I would like to see a more extensive piece done on say AKC Agility dogs. Because i'm not sure how things are up north but in Florida we have about 80% Spayed and Neutered dogs competing in agility. And because agility is an impact sport. It would show the most incidnets of damages caused against the smaller pool of intact animals competing. (Note: You can not run a dog in agility if she is in heat)
I personally think 4 months is too young to neuter, but i also don't own this dog. So i have no say in the matter. Susie i know your across the pond in Germany where there are anti-alteration laws. Which is 100% the oppisiate of the US. And I'm suprised since PETA is so active over there that they have not gone after dog breeders yet.
You can't Breed if your dogs are fixed, that is the slogan they chant over here.

Thank you, Dragonfry - very interesting - convincing article - I don´t know.
Spay and neuter takes place in dog pounds over here, too, otherwise it´s not very common, but times do change here, too.
There are almost no strays in Germany, so I don´t see the reason to spay and neuter.
If I don´t want puppies, I don´t breed...isn´t it simple?

That would be nice in the US but here we have a saying. "You can't fix stupid, not even with duct tape"
And the problem is we got a whole lot of stupid all over they country. But we also don't have "Dog Breed Warrens" and actual breeding requirements and stuff like that.
Mostly it's hey you got a dog? wanna breed? Then sell the puppies at Walmart parking lot of $25 a pup.
I do know good breeders, those with waiting list for puppies. But those people are few and far between compared to the back yard breeders and the puppy millers.
It's sad really.
I'm still not very convinced with thier reseach in that articale. 1 breed doesn't not make a complete picture.
