What do you folks suggest in terms of a collar which is "gentler" on the malinois coat? I use a prong and find it is tough on the coat. I prefer the prong to the choke chain, but, tried it to compare the two and found it  too wears the coat.

try the large looped chokers, each loop is long

Yup I prefer the large looped choke collars, too.  Gentle on the coat.  Again, there are better ones and bad ones.  Some have long and thin wired loops.  I like the relatively shorter, fatter loops.  They are what we call here the "fur-saving collars".  :)
