Hi Guys 
I'm Czar's owner/trainer, so cute he has a little fan club. I had not considered working with a Mali pup until I saw Briggs Von Armour in Kansas City the past summer. The bells and whistles went off, I had to have a Briggszee of my own.
When I selected Czar the last thing on my mind was the length of his coat. I have since been contacted by someone who told me (based on a picture of an 8 wk old puppy) he was a long coat and a plague upon the breed. In that moment i confess i had remorse for picking him. I knew the early history of the breed and that Europe considered the workabliity and not coat type when selecting dogs for breeding. I never even thought about what was acceptable in the US or what AKC rules were in regard to Mals and truthfully still haven't looked at the AKC standard. For a moment I thought about sending him back but quickly realized I had one heck of a dog under my roof and would be crazy not to make him my teammate. I may be totally off base and if so please correct me. I write this with the assumption Czar is a long coat and at this point in time, I'm sure he will look like his sire and dam. Long story short if the dog can do the job I don't care what kind of coat it has. Would love to hear what you all think about coat type and the impact it has on the breed.

You could always take the pup to the groomer for a trim up to make him look like the other mals.
No joke! i use to groom a police dog that was GSD/Border collie, she was a drug dog. But the handler had me trim her up to look like a regular shepherd. Nice dog to work with too.
