I have since been contacted by someone who told me (based on a picture of an 8 wk old puppy) he was a long coat and a plague upon the breed.

Must have been a show person LOL  All he is, is a Tervuren with AKC Malinois papers.  Not even close to a plague upon the breed.  And actually, even in the AKC Malinois standard not a disqualification.   Probably wouldn't get to far in the show ring, but considering the standard says the severity of a fault is to be judged based on how it effects working ability, a dog with a bad front, straight rear, east/west feet, cow hocked, etc but a short coat should loose every time over a "long haired Malinois" with good structure.  Not that it will happen :-)

In Europe these dogs are valued because they can be used in the working Tervuren gene pool.  They would be valued here also if AKC would recombine the "breeds" back into the Belgian Shepherd with varieties.  Then again, some of us with Malinois still value them :-)  I've had 4 so far, not going to toss one out just because it's fluffy.

I know a bit of the bloodlines Czar is from, he will not be a long hair, he maybe will have a bit longer hair then a shorthair Mail, but by far not long enough to fall out of the standard for Mail. For all i can see and know he will look like this after a year or so...

About the lenght of the coat, that has nothing to do with workabillity. It has more to do whit what they like to do with dogs. Shorthair is not used for showdog (not often) they have other bloodlines then the longhair (Tervurenaar), this type is mostely used as showdog, not as working dog, but mind you i know some great working Tervurenaars, if you like to see one just check www.k9-movies.com

This is a picture of a dog Czar will look like when older :)

I also saw fluffy mal pups that became short hair as adult.  Is it possible for short hair pups to become long hair as adult?

One-year winter coat:
And two year summer coat:
She is registered as a malinois with the AKC. Great working dog.

Very Beautiful dogs pictured.

I have been following this thread with some interest, as especially with the Malinois, as they are being used in other varieties and at least one other breed.
1. Groenendal
2. Laekenois
3. Tervuren
4. Dutch Shepherd

So, sometimes the database will have up to 5 versions of the same animal, all in a different breed or variety.
this makes it easy for newcomers to add their dog's entire lineage quickly no matter the breed or variety, but it also makes the entry, line-breeding and progeny information less accurate and reliable. Your more than welcome to continue sharing ideas and/or thoughts. Perhaps it will help me and others better cope with the unique Malinois/Belgian sheepdog pedigree situation.
Here a Long Hair Dutch Shepherd from Malinois Father, Enjoy
