Hi we have a 10 month old mal who is very friendly with people we bring into our house but when we are sitting down he will lie down at your feet or mine and if you move them he will attack you or if you are standing close to him the same will happen  any ideas  how to fix this Tom

Have you tried obedience training? This sounds like a dog that doesn't have any manners and little or on training. If you do not seek professional help sooner or later you will get sued or the dog will be put down. This is not safe.
It is your responsibility as the dog's owner to make guest in your home safe from your dog. If he can not be controlled then kennel him.
best of luck
Fry

What dragonfry said, find a trainer to evaluate the dog and help you train it.  From reading your post I can envision anything from a rude, drivey "teen" (little to old to be a pup, not quite an adult) dog who is going after people's feet when they move, to an out of control punk dog who is resource guarding people and attacking others when they get near, neither scenario being any good, but how each would be handled would be different.  The common denominator being training.

Just out of curiosity: when did this behaviour start? I'm willing to bet it's fairly recent, and is a result of your dog maturing and entering the 'teenage' stage, where they start to test boundaries.

A good trainer will help you solve this, hopefully before you get sued!

thanks for your imput  but i think that sunsilver  could be right as the dog has only started this behaviour  in the last couple of weeks. he is obediance trained 5days a week and very well socialzed as far as a good trainer is concerned this is not possible where i live

Tom, since you don't say where you are, the board members can't help
you find out if it really is 'impossible' to find an experienced Trainer in
your reach.

Basic Ob.  doesn't cut it for cases like this, you do need to get on top of
the behaviour, before it's allowed to escalate.  Difficult to advise you further
as we cannot meet the dog and see exactly how it happens, but I do agree
with the others, this sounds like a case of 'teenage bad manners' that has
gone further than usual.

You need to closely examine your relationship with this dog, and that of the
rest of your family,  and check where the 'pack hierarchy' is breaking down.
Is the dog getting 'mixed messages' about what is, and is not, acceptable
behaviour ?   Are you still 'leader of the pack' or has the dog managed to start
controlling resources ?

Hmm, appreciate your difficulties !  [Maybe our Queensland branch can
add something helpful - calling vk4 ?...     J.K.]

Seriously, i do have one suggestion:
get your dog trained to go and lie down somewhere that's away from your /
visitors feet.  Either his own regular bed if he sleeps indoors and it is close
by, or get him an extra mat or dog-duvet, place it in your room somewhere
out of reach of feet & sofas.  Start working on a 'bed' command, send him to
lie on it whenever anyone wants to sit in the room.  Then he may get up when
you / your guests do, but he is out of range of feet (and cannot misinterpret
getting up as an attempt to kick.)                              Linda.

My mal is just over a year and started becoming a little aggressive (resource guarding with people) and started testing her boundaries. She was always in regular ongoing obedience class but this did not cut it. I met with one trainer for private sessions, didn't help. Met with another one to tackle the issue and now she's simmering back down again. I'd keep searching for a trainer but in the meantime make him  'earn' everything so he doesn't continue to push his boundaries and get away with it.

tomo, i got a good contact i believe is still in WA. he imported a bunch of mals out of the KNPV that were bred a lot in the west. highly likely that yr mal has this blood if it was bred there, as you said they are rare over there. these particular lines are very aggressive, hard and well proven street, military and police dogs, both studs having several live bites, handler aggression is certainly part of their make-up. there have been enough litters that some would have made their way into the hands of BYB cashing in and breeding and selling them indiscriminately which for the average pet home could cause serious problems. i won't post or pm his contact details but can pass on yours and am happy to give you my phone number and get you both in touch, just ask.

good luck and if this pup is the lines i think they are from you and your family could be in deep shit if you don't handle it right.

cheers pete
