is flaxseed good for dogs, they say it is loaded with phytoestrogen?  what are the effects of these?  thanks for any inputs.

Not sure how good or bad it is for dogs, lots of food manufacturer's use it in the dog foods but a while back 2 of my 4 dogs itched like crazy within hours after giving them something with any type flax, seeds or oil.  Soooooooo, currently I try to avoid it but not always possible.  Different for humans.  That's about all I know about it.  Good fiber in seeds...Good luck  Nan

I've used the Missing link for 14 years and it's base ingredient is Flax seed. Never has any problems. In fact i like the stuff so much i've used i for 14 year.........
It makes for smooth soft and nice smelling coats. Seem to get better digestion. Dog's love it.

It is a plant source of 18- carbon Omega 3 fatty acid.

For animals, it has to be elongated to 20 and 22 carbon Omega 3. There is a question to the effectiveness of dogs to elongate the carbon chain. Younger dogs tend to be better at this.

For old dogs, I prefer fish oil, which is already the elongated form.

I feed grain free but I do put flaxseed in satin balls I feed because I do think it is beneficial.

sometimes the more we read, the more we bounce around from one brand of dog food to another.  There are a lot of articles written about its effect on canine fertility, and skin allergies.

i have several dogs who eat it with no problem.  i have 2 older gsds that cannot tolerate it at all.  they just chew the
hell out of their feet.  i think there are a lot of better choices----like coconut oil.    pjp
