Hello, I am looking to get a Belgian Malinois puppy in the next year and a half. I've owned one before but she was 3 when I got her and a retired police dog (she didn't like bomb sounds and they had to let her go) I would like to know any tips you guys could offer me and if you know of any good reasonably priced akc breeders in south Texas. Any assistance is appreciated Thank you in advance.

I would try an advanced search here:
http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/breeders.list
Then, I would search for breeders in the areas or states nearest you.

Hope that helps

I train my dogs for rally and obedience trials, I was wondering if you can do that and the personal protection training? Or is it not safe.

I did AKC obedience with my German Shepherd and I also did personal protection work with him. He did body suit and hidden sleeve work. I feel that any dog that has a stable nerve and is clear headed should be able to do both.

It is not a black or white answer. I don't think that it is dependent upon whether or not the dog has been protection trained, but is dependent upon the dog's individual temperament. It all depends upon the dog and how he interpretes his environment and the people in it. For example, I have females and a few males that can walk through an AKC show and can handle outstretched hands petting them that would bite a person if he broke into my house. I have males that are very social but are reactive if they perceive a threat about 5 feet around me. I have some males that can be petted in a dominant fashion over their head and some that will not submit to that treatment. Just as there are some police dogs that can do demos in schools and some that you need to stand 15 feet away from when they walk by.

The best thing to do is to find a breeder who really knows the temperament of the parents and the grandparents of the litter that you are interestind in.

There are some SAR groups that do not allow dogs to be xtrained in bite sports, but that is a different topic. But to do SAR, the dog needs to have a temperamnet to not react to a scared child or adult at the end of the trail.

So it is a case by case decision, based on the individual dog's temperament.
