Abby--some animal shelters are funded by the city or county and some are privately funded.   Some rural areas do not have an animal shelter.

If a vet uses and injection or a bullet, the result is the same. Neither is more humane than the other.  There can be arguments made for both.  Dead is dead.  For all we know, injections are excruciating and the most inhumane way to die.  It paralyzes their bodies, their cells may be screaming for oxygen from a heart that can't beat and lungs that can't breath.  We don't know, we're just guessing.  a bullet ends all nuerologic activity pretty quickly too.

This is ridiculous on so many levels.

Likely that 10 minutes of suffering is a huge exaggeration going by the source and presentation.

So maybe the dog never suffered from the shot at all! That could be true, too!

Let's face it, none of us were there and neither was the person who wrote the article.  So, it's all conjecture.

Indeed it could.

So, Greenfield OH is a very rural small city located
between Columbus OH & Cinncinati OH.

Nearest Pet ER according to the Greenfield Police dept.
would likely be in either of those two larger cities.
Cinncinati is roughly a 90 minute drive. There is NO
Animal control officer for Greenfield, there is no dog
pound.
There is a dog warden that covers Highland County.
Thats right, one guy. He works regular business hours.
No emergency call out.
Greenfield Police are essentially Animal Contol officers.

By the way, if you call Greenfield Police, they will very
readily answer any questions anyone may have,
937-981-7778, including putting you through to the
Police Chief himself if you would like. The Officer that
answered the phone was very polite, did confirm that
the animal was in very POOR condition. He wasn't aware
of much of the specifics but said the Chief would be more
than willing to answer any and all questions.
