I checked a kennel I drive by on the way to work everyday.
http://www.cheadeauxkennels.com/
"$18.00 per night.
If boarding more than one dog in a single run, each additional dog is only $10.00. "
THIS is for strangers. I mean, come on! If I only needed to board my dog for a day or a week, $18/day, isn't so bad, but usually decent folk charge less for longer stays, or as this boarding kennel does, gives a discount for more than one dog.
If I had a friend who charged me $18/day/per DOG for 5 months!!.... well, thanks but no thanks, I can find better friends, I'm sure.
Nice that your friends could afford to give up some of their income for 5 months on your behalf, Red Sable, but not everyone has that luxury. As it is, Molly nearly always has some of the kennel runs tied up with rescue dogs instead of generating income for her, but you seem to think she ought to have been willing to further reduce her income 'because it's a friend'. A boarding kennel is a business that depends on the disretionary income of it's clientele, and there's a whole lot less discretionary income to go around these days. Now you're probably thinking that less business means those runs would have been empty anyway--and to some degree, yes, they might have been, but the fact remains that they were occupied during the most financially critical periods of the year for boarding kennels--the summer months, when people traditionally vacation, and the fall and winter holidays. I really don't think it's fair to suggest that anyone else's livelihood should have been reduced in order to help out somebody, even a friend. Although lots of folks here have helped Shelley out in various ways, I'm pretty sure none of them (including me) have *sacrificed* to do so. Been inconvenienced, maybe, or had to delay some gratification or other, perhaps, but it's doubtful there's been any real sacrificing (nor should there have been).
And BTW, I live in bumF**k Nowhere, NE Michigan, and the boarding kennels here charge from $18 to $20/day for large breed dogs, so $18 is nowhere near out of line for the NE part of the US.

And I know plenty of people going through divorce who ended up in the basement spare room for at least 5 months. Not terribly uncommon.
And I might just send Shelley a check yet, one never knows.

Yep, that's me, calling out the poster who posts lies about me and asking her to put up or shut up. Wouldn't you do the same?
Notice however, that my simple question made MaggieMae disappear? I'm still waiting for her self-proclaimed "facts" to be posted.

Molly and I have had our issues and differences. Check that-- we have our issues and differences. But, I would agree with her on this one: No one reasonably expects anyone (friend, acquaintance or stranger) to board their (multiple) dogs for five to six months free of charge.
Of course, we have not "heard " Shelley's take on this. So, it may turn out to be totally different when all the facts and perspectives are known...if they must be.

By the way, I board friends dogs for free ALL THE TIME. I board my own-bred puppies for free because I just love to see them - many owners drive hours to bring them to me, and most of them pay me anyway even though I try to refuse their money. I've boarded Shelley's dogs for free before, too when she had previous problems with her husband and felt the dogs' safety was in question. In fact the last time if I recall correctly I had 4 or 5 of them for several weeks. For free.

I repeat what i said in an above post If a person is worried and stressed out then they do not think normally and Shelley must have been both it was a huge undertaking to make the move and no matter what anyone says Stress can play tricks and it is not nice at all i would think most of the Guys on here have had some kind of stress in there life time if not then they are lucky people, In my years i have had it only once and that was enough, but i had no help but to sort it myself and it is much the same for everyone some can cope better than others depending on the situation, So what i am saying is that Shelley is probably not her normal self in these circumstances, and faults if any made at all here on this journey to a new place is probably not the real Shelley in a normal living every day conditions
No one can take sides at all for Molly or Shelley, it has happened and both must get on and put it down to experience
