Now, I think you are missing an important point about this jerky "treat" contamination. The processed and contaminated jerky could be imported into China for packaging, and exported out as Made in China. That is the problem. Or take place likewise, in any other country, because these items are not tested as a "food" product.
And since all the previous scares are known and presumably the first one's FDA would test for, it is only sensible to think all those mentioned on this thread are NOT the cause of the mysterious sicknesses and deaths.
You, however were able to rant about those past issues as if they were indeed the cause of the problem, now.

Jerky treats have also caused pet deaths. Since 2007, the F.D.A. has counted about 580 pet deaths connected to chicken, duck and sweet potato jerky treats, nearly all of which were imported from China. However, it is not clear whether the regulations, if passed, could have prevented the deaths because the F.D.A. is not sure yet what the hazard is. The agency had received more than 3,000 complaints about the jerky over five years.
The proposal is open for public comment for 120 days. If passed, it would regulate the production of feed for millions of farm animals, including cows, pigs and chickens, as well as pet food.

Now, do you want the FDA to regulate production feed of animals and pet food? I would think that is the way to go. Then when products imported from other countries enter the USA, and not just from China, mind you, the FDA can advise them on our standards that MUST be met. This should compel oversight and interest in finding out what is really going on with the "jerky" products.
How does that sound to you?
