TIG

I know this is never never land stuff but on the odd chance it is not - and maybe one of those knowledgeable about computers can tell us that - here is is my wish.

In the perfect world, each repy would have a little button that said delete this post. When a predetermined # of people hit that button (number known only to forum owner - could be 5 or 500) a message would be sent to a forum monderator to check out THAT particular post . The mod could then make an informed decision whether the TOS were being violated and/or whether there was impt and useful information in the post. If that reply was found offensive and out of bounds then that reply and only that reply would be deleted or edited to remove the offensive content only.

I suspect in a thread design it is not possible to delete or edit individual posts - that it is an all or nothing scenario but we can all dream and w/ technology changing so fast maybe there is a way or a different format that looks like a thread but is put together differently behind the scenes to allow such snipping.

I think if something like this could be done then most of the troll problem goes away because they don't get the reward of seeing their posts and don't get the reward of creating drama from such posts.

Like I said - one can dream.

Oli, thank you for such a wonderful site. I am truly sorry that people are not more respectful of the wonderful resouce you have created. But also thank you for removing the IP addresses- I had several issues with that - some already mentioned and others not mentioned. Because of the random generation of IP addresses by most ISPs this probably is not possible but again just food for thought - can an individual user be blocked from posting based on IP or other info wh/ is transmitted by their computer- perhaps the unique # Preston mentioned ( tho I think that was only Win ME and after editions)?

Thank you again and let us know what we can do to help you in this endeavor. I hope all goes well with the new little one and that you and your family had a good Christmas and Little Christmas(Feast of the 3 kings). Thank you for sharing your gifts thru the gift you give us everyday of the year - this site.  I wish for you and your family peace, prosperity and good health.      Beth

Louise M. Penery:  To me,  much of the beauty of this site lies in its lack of formal moderation.

Those people aspiring to be moderators are likely to be the ones who tend abuse their positions.

About the only person (other than Oli) that I would trust to be a moderator would be Bob-O  He and Oli are all about personal integrity. However, I truly believe that Bob-O  would be more likely to favor moderation via software rather than via humans (with all their foibles).

Mystere

"Mystere/Nia - you know nothing.  You are one of the very naive (or stupid?) ones who think what someone tells you is the truth, and that someone is not posting under so many alias names that it's pitiful how many of you don't realize who the trolls are.    Find out who is TheEnd, TimLC, BeammeupScotty, KHill, Cahill24, JRT, doggie_1, Ike2, Pat Relton, KOUGAR, and many other alias's.  Oh of course you won't be able to tell who they are, because they post via a proxy or anonymizer.  And they tell you they are innocent and you believe them.  What a shame.

VERRYY  INTERESTING!!

Molly,  one MUST wonder at a response like this from you.    I am neither naive, nor stupid , nor affected by  any  developmental condition.      Nor do I bother with what  "someone  tells me"--including your nemesis, Lee, with whom I have not spoken for over a year.    (Not that that is any of your business, but your apparent misapprehension is undoubtedly behind this very revealing post from you).  I saw the IPs clear as day, along with everyone else.   Odd, again, that YOU seem to be so immediately defensive: How do YOU know that I was not referencing  to Cahill, etc.?  Hmmm?    What on Earth makes you think that you would have a CLUE who tells me anything about anything, or anyone?  Again, way too much defensiveness....and very revealing.  You might want to just knock it off and stop giving yourself away.

TIG, What would prevent certain people with agendas from clicking your magic "little button" numerous times.

For example, if I post something about animal rights extremism (a subject close to your heart), what is to keep a brigade of PETA fanatics from clicking the button?

My god Louise!  We agree on something!  You're a Jeffersonian too?!

I would agree with Bob-O myself, and I would probably nominate Blitzen too.

I dont know if the IP addresses are no longer published, but if they are not then I am glad.  I think that IP addresses are great for the board administrators, but there is NO REASON in the world why they should be just listed up on a public medium for all time. It opens up a can of worms and possible security issues for your posters.

A good terms of service agreement would give moderators something to go by. A good TOS is not unclear.

Oli, I have administrated a gaming forum community for 5 years running now. Here is a copy of our TOS and it has worked for us. Feel free to use it if you would like to. Good luck!

Also I would add that this is private property- I wouldnt get hung up on playing nice with abusers-a few bad apples....

Nia - I don't care what you think and yes I do think you are naive AND stupid.  My opinion, so it is.  I only post as eichenluft.  Always have.  My contact information has always been on my profile and I always sign my posts.  UNlike others, I never have a problem expressing my opinion publicly.  Ask away and if I know or have a first-hand opinion, I will tell - and not anonymously.  So, have you figured out who the alias's I listed are?  Or who it is?  Not yet, right?  But you're smart - you will figure it out, I'm certain.
