Sorry, no suggestions for work and titles are acceptable. 99.9% of ASl would be immediately eliminated.

I would like to suggest the "Tractor Supply meet the stranger" test for breed worthiness.

dog and owner stand outside a Tractor Supply store and are approached by a non threatning stranger. Dog must accept and consume a hot dog offered by the stranger. failure to consume the hot dog or any attempt to avoid the stranger will result in loss of points.

This test, by my estimate, would only result in eliminating 50%, but it's a start in the right direction.

ILMD, if my dog ever ate a hotdog offered by a stranger, I would eliminate him.

Please elaborate on doing something better then most, equals ruin for all. Im not familiar with this philosophy.  That might be a grand prize, silly winner.  But I will hear you out :)~

Tracking, obedience & bite work, proves a sport dog, has no relevance with looking great and being shown, so how does that make a show line breed able? It does add value to an animal but how does it benefit being best in class. I have ZeRo show line experience are those title's required?? I don't know.

Explain "Universal German Shepherd" If I breed for seeing eye dog, does tracking and bite work proof my dog making them a viable breeding option, breed able for the blind, now. Thats straight goofy to me. If someone wants a man killer Im not starting with a show line or a sport dog. I don't think most police or military agencies are going to like your program one size fits all. But I'm open to hearing this philosophy.

Is the hot dog kosher?

by gsdstudent on 07 July 2014 - 18:07

what if when taking the hotdog from the stranger the dog bit off 2 fingers?

Hired Dog

2 fingers no good, I need at least 4 to count and Gigante, Kosher ones are the best hotdogs ever, however, my dogs do not accept food from strangers.

Gigante, the German Shepherd over here has to be titled prior to breeding, but I like your sarcasm...

If you are looking for a "seeing eye" dog, just look for a stable green German Shepherd without defense drive, but in reality go for a Golden, the chance to find a suitable seeing eye dog within that breed is higher than within the German Shepherd breed. This breed wasn´t created to be a "seeing eye" dog, this breed wasn´t created to be a "bomb detection" dog, it wasn´t even created to be a "man eater" dog - but opposite to other breeds this breed is able to do almost everything, the German Shepherd ( at least in my opinion ) should be a like a decathlete, not the best in one venue, but the best in the sum of all single venues.

Agree with Susie (again...) and Capt. Stephanitz (the founder of the breed) also believed that the Shepherd should be a jack of all trades and master of none.

Biting a hand that is not a threat is by no measure the sign of a stable temperament. Even in Ring, the test of choice for Malinois, the decoy is allowed in the ring for the object guard if he isn't going after the object.

People should really research the breed they want to be a part of.  I want a shepherd but I don't want him to be a working dog, only a show dog...

I want a beagle but by god he better not chase rabbits,

I want a basset hound  but I don't want his nose on the ground all the time,

I want a husky but I don't want him all hyper and energetic, I want him to be low key and just hang out in the back yard....

and the list goes on....

susie, Second best at everything, best at nothing. Times have changed. There slipping out second on alot of things. This philosophy, of no no I want to drive a model T to work is inefficient, and a serious pain in the ass if your unlucky enough... and one of those cars get in front of you on the expressway.  All things evolve or die. You cant fight that. You say the breed was not created for this or that and probably plenty will agree with that, but thats short sighted and not correct. The ultimate goal was is created to serve man, and no other, does it better. Trial and trial artist no longer reflect much reality or scope.

We must realize that we do not breed and work for exhibitions or trials but for our breed and to serve the general public (common good).

The publics needs have changed a tad. :) So should have trials

Two fingers is 1 extra hot dog for the dog.....  four fingers and I charge $3000 more for that dog.

hired dog, this is actually recommended by a lot of breeders in an attempt to get dogs to not shy away from judge.

you have to keep in mind we're talking about improving the ASL.

I'm going to have to add missing fingers to loss of points list. thanks for the suggestion, this thing will be sorted out in no time.
