First.... I came home the other night from my oldest daughter's graduation from High School.  Was a very happy time....until I got home to find a business card on my fence about my "barking dogs"!    Now, I don't like barking dogs as much as the next person, and do EVERYTHING in my power to make sure that my dogs don't.  THE ONLY time I encourage my dogs to bark is at the freakin neighbor that continiously walks my fence line with her dog off leash.  (See a previous thread on this story)  I have GSD's...go figure.  They are VERY protective of my property.  They bark at strangers....not passing cars, not loud noise, not birds in the yard..sometimes not even when I come home!  (although there might be some excitable whines for me to get inside the gate!)  ANYWAY...long story short.  I called the officer in questions.  Did some digging of my own.  The complaint was made by the neighbor that walks the fence line every single freakin day.  And behold....the officer and this woman are RELATED!!!!  The officer stated, "I only observed the 2 adult dogs barking when I pulled into your drive way.  When I pulled out, they stopped barking and just watched me."  DUHHHHH!!!  Lucky for me, I guess, he was SMART enough NOT to get out of his car and come into my fenced yard!!!  I asked him if he heard the puppies barking at all, he said NO!!!  I then told him to do his homework next time, see that there has been previous problems with me and the complaintant, and to tell his COUSIN to go to hell, and hung up on him!  GOD I CAN'T WAIT TO MOVE AND HAVE MY KENNEL BUILT.....3 MORE WEEKS!!!

Second..  I agree that before any monies are spent to replace Max, that we ensure that proper fencing or a kennel is provided!  I even go so far as to have an invisible fence INSIDE my fence!  Section 4, par. C of my puppy contract states, "Buyer agrees that this animal will NEVER tied or chained to anything and anytime unsupervised...."  (knock on wood), I've only ever had to confinscate 2 puppies in almost 20 years for this violation!  I am in no way, shape or form passing judgement here!!!  Some subdivision have stipulations on how high a fence can me, hence the invisible fence inside the fence.  Bottom line, let's make sure it's done correctly before we just start throwing money out there.

Third, and final.  Max's family...if you would like to contact me privately, I might possible be able to assist you in some of these areas!

ziegenfarm-those people weren't the ones who owed child support. I believe if I read the article correctly it was a stepson of one of the owners who never even lived at that house.  Even if he did live there it gave no right for a dog that was minding his own business in his own yard on a chain to boot to have been brutally killed.  Once our children are grown adults we have no control over them handling their business and paying their obligations for kids.  Let's not crucify the family now for their kids irresponsibility.

Brittany- I think the reason everyone's coming forward to donate for a new pup rather than for legal battles is because there is not enough money on this board to pay a private attorney who will charge at min. $150/hr. to take this case he has a very small chance in prevailing; especially since the county has their own attorney's on retainer for things like this so it would not cost the cop one single penny.  Morally and legally I am with everyone that something SHOULD be done BUT I am also a realist who has unfortunately had to encounter battles with public entities and this battle was extremely expensive-yes in the end I won but when I tallied the attorney's fees I really didn't "win" just got personal gratification for standing up for what I believed was right.  Would I ever do this again-probably not, since I am not independantly wealthy this was money wasted.  Sometimes it's just better to accept there is just some battles you can't win.

I'm just curious with all the breeders on this site who have puppies right now why no one has offered to donate one to this family????  If I were a breeder and I had a litter those people would have had a puppy to love on their doorstep the next day.......I'm new and don't know many of these people but I would donate to this cause.  Hell we probably waste more money on lottery tickets and nonsense every week so why not donate $25- $50???

*  Do the Mattias even WANT a free dog? Who said they cant afford to buy another? Perhaps they want to select a very special dog from a particular breeding. Jamming a free dog down their throat isnt the answer here folks. Although your hearts are in the right place and are big, I think it prudent until we hear from them on their wishes.

Funk man you are correct; perhaps they are grieving their loss and aren't prepared to decide if they want another dog or are ready to accept one.  I'm sure they could afford another dog but why should these people have to go through this expense through no fault of their own???  What I would have really liked to have seen is the police department come forward making a kind gesture by offering to pay for a dog that the owners would select (within reason).  For the dept to admitt fault is not gonna happen, but it would show some compassion without admitting any wrongdoing if they'd just offer to do something nice for this family in order to ease their loss.  I'm pleasantly surprised how supportive and giving the many people on this board have been; truly coming together  in a time of one's need.  My suggestion to help them get another dog was not to insinuate they couldn't afford one or to jam a free dog down their throat, I just felt that in a time like this it would have been a nice gesture to make an offer to them for when and if they felt the time was right to get another dog.  With all the overwhelming support all over the country I'm sure all they would have to say is "we're ready to get another dog" and hopefully some kind person would come forward and say "come on over and pick yourself one".  But you are correct that it may be premature for them to make that decission right now.

Agar, your gesture was one of good will.

I know I said I was done with this (but who on here ever REALLY means that :).

Echo,

I get what you are saying but believe there are other answers than tethering.  My friends dog is an absolute escape artist and she makes accomodations. If he is only tied out periodically why aren't those periods when the family is home instead of unsupervised on a tether?

And for God's sake can you address the REAL ISSUE? It's not the tieout IT'S THE CHOKE COLLAR THEY TIED HIM OUT ON!!!!  Echo---address the choke collar they tied him out on!!!!  This is the biggest issue WHY DO YOU EXPLAIN EVERYTHING BUT THE DAMN CHOKE COLLAR??!!  mAYBE BECAUSE THERE IS NO EXCUSE TO EXPLAIN THIS AWAY????

You're the one who is trying to explain their side. You're the one that is giving them a puppy. Why on earth do you relay information about their actions on every count but this? A dog rescue that doesn't question an owner who tethers a dog on a choke while unsupervised.

This is honestly Bizarro World.

LOL Bizarro yes! These threads are going on too long. Time to sit back and see what comes of this. Plenty of time to hang people later, I say anyway!

By the way I'm not backing that $50 pledge in my name for another pup. So far no one is setting up an account and I'd like to know allot more before I can in good consience place a pup with someone I know nothing about.

Nice thought at first glance but after mulling it over, too many questions left unanswered.

Same here forget my donation also because It seems dawg wants to put words in everyone mouth  I am a longtime breeder and oppose the choke being used for any dog , even take it off when u put your dog in a kennel....that was not my point in trying to cool down the hate threads that were getting hot crucifying people who just lost a dog on a tether , which is used all over the world on dogs, in reason,  and responsibly, and not to  just keep the ridicule up...Dogs in fences can be in danger just like one on a choke tied......that was the reason for mentioning that....wow  I feel like a teacher going back over and explaining what is meant ...only dawg to get people to think.......so u want to make the point the choke,,,,on the dog with a rope,,,,I thought the dog got killed by bullets not a choke....and no I DO NOT AGREE WITH TIEING A DOG ON A CHAIN OR ROPE WITH A CHOKE......A WIDE COLLAR THAT WE USE FOR TRAINING AND BITEWORK IF A DOG HAS TO BE CONTAINED FOR ANY REASON....WHO KNOWS WHETHER THE DOG IS TIED EACH DAY THERE AT THAT HOUSE   i SURE DONT AND NEITHER DO ANY OF YOU.....MY POINT DAWG IS TO SAY THAT IN THIS STATE AND COUNTRY DOGS ARE KEPT SAFELY WITH OUT BEING IN A KENNEL OR A WIRE FENCE...AND NO MATTER WHERE OR HOW THE DOG WAS, IT GOT KILLED BY A LOAD OF SEVEN SHOTS,,,,CHAIN, CHOKE, KENNEL FENCE OR WHATEVER......THIS OFFICER WOULD HAVE PROBABLY KILLED IT NO MATTER WHERE IT WAS, EVEN ON THE OTHER SIDE OF A DOOR OR WINDOW ACCORDING TO WHAT IS BEING SAID   DAWG...THATS WHY WE NEED TO FIND OUT IF THIS OFFICER IS EVEN SANE....I THOUGHT THAT WAS WHY EVERY ONES PUSHING THESE KEYS.........BUT JUST BECAUSE A PERSON DOESNT TELL ME HE HAS NO FENCE OR KENNEL , HES INSTRUCTED TO GET ONE, AND IF A PERSON CHOOSES TO USE AN ELECTRIC NO FENCE WIRELESS FENCE , AM I SUPPOSE TO TELL THEM THEY ARE CRAZY AND CANT BUY ONE OF MY DOGS.....POLICE DOGS GET SHOT, SCHUTZHUND DOGS JUMP HURDLES AND HANG THEMSELVES, SERVICE DOGS FALL OFF MOUNTAINS, AND I SOLD EVERYONE ON THOSE PEOPLE A DOG......IF THEY TOLD ME THEY WERE GONNA TIE IT ON A CHOKE COLLAR, ID TELL THEM , THEY WERE CRAZY AND THEIR NOT GETTING ONE OF MY DOGS....BUT DO YOU THINK THEY WOULD TELL ME....OF COURSE NOT......I WAS PRESENTING SEVERAL SYNARIOS ABOUT HOW DOGS MEET THEIR DEMISE, NOT THAT I AGREE WITH IT.....LORD HAVE MERCY,,,ITS FOR SURE YOU DONT KNOW ME .......CAUSE IF YOU DID,   YOU WOULD REST ASSUREDLY KNOW IM SO HARSE ON HOW TO KEEP, RAISE AND TRAIN A GSD YOU WOULD SAY,  HIEL HITLER....SO THERE IS MY EXPO AND I WILL NOT CONTRIBUTE ANY MONEY TILL WE ALL DECIDE WHAT IS BETTER TO DO      LIKE CASTRATE THE DEPUTY.... OR JUST SEND A NICE POT PLANT AND SAY OUR GRIEF IS WITH YOU ...AS A CHRISTIAN I SURE HOPE NO ONE EVERY TALKS ABOUT ME LIKE SOME HERE HAVE TALKED ABOUT THIS FAMILY.....MISTAKE OR NON.....    THANKS TO GARD AND ECHO ;, BLITZEN   4-PACK AND ALL FOR YOUR KINDNESS,,,,,,IT GOES A LONG WAY....IM GOING TO THE WOODS AND LOVE ON ALL  MY KIDS NOW AND TELL THEM THIS STORY.........

by Blitzen on 30 May 2007 - 02:05

LOL, did you mean a pot plant or a potted plant?

allaboutthedawgs

by allaboutthedawgs on 30 May 2007 - 02:05

Yes, he was killed with a bullet. Different thread. This thread was about whether the dog should be replaced. My point was it needs to be verified, not assumed, that these people have a clue now. The Texas two step of not addressing the choke part of the tieout was what I couldn't get.  The other scenarios weren't valid because we did in fact know these people tied with a chain.

I didn't and don't hate these people. I don't know who you are accusing of hatred but surely your Bible admonishes not to make false allegations. The only ones I've seen made regarding the way these people restrained their dog were based on the families own words.

And it is for sure I don't know you. Which is why I assumed you didn't see the choke tieout as important since you wouldn't address it. And it is good to see you have come to your senses and are not telling everyone "THIS IS NOT THE PLACE NOR THE TIME FOR CRITICAL RENDITIONS...IF YOU DON'T AGREE JUST KEEP IT TO YOURSELF...". Much better that you are now evaluating what is better to do.

And if the cop is found to be the ass most suspect I'll sharpen the knife for the castration.
