The dogs in the RTT thread were bashed becuase they weren't bred to conform ot any standard!  Those dogs look no more like GSD's than the Shilohs.  I think this is the cruxt of the situation.

Do you remember a specific "German Shepherd" you used to know as a child (or if you are under 40)

obviously I have much more idea than some, and i look at old pictures and ones from the working lines today, they don't look to far off, and they MOST DEFINEATLY WERE NOT BIGGER in the "old days"  if anything they had finer bone and were smaller and looked much more mal like in some of them

by Tina M. Barber on 27 June 2007 - 16:06

zdog said <<and yet you claim to be creating a breed that reminded you of the GSD's you grew up with and saw in Germany????? Right????? >>

Now I would like to ask YOU guys .... How did the GSD become a breed?  Did they just fall down from heaven? Or were other breeds used to create a certain "type" .. if so .. CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT BREEDS WERE USED & WHY??

Let me guess, Hector was bred to a little Shiba Inu & then those pups were crossed with little Poms???  NO? Then some BIG dogs were used??  OMG ... if dogs like Pyrs were used, they may have ended  up with some long coats & white -- never mind SHILOH size ROTFLMAO!

Barber here is my previous post  .  Tell me where I got nasty . I just did not agree with your statement of german bred dogs and that I personally would not own a Shilo . !

here is my previous post

I do not have enough info on Shilo's .I am sure many who are interested in this breed  love them  however I did have a proplem with the breders statement  of German bred dogs

"(2)The German Imports on the other hand have excellent strong protective instincts, but they have been bred mainly for Schutzhund competition only. Since Americans pay thousands of dollars to import 'Working' dogs, the competition to produce hotter-tougher-harder specimens became intense. Price wars saw many inferior animals being brought in because they were cheaper and still considered Imports. These dogs have been bred here, resulting in polluting the good blood that had also been imported.

Many of these dogs stay in a continuously "hyper" stage, constantly looking for "action," and therefore do not make good house pets or companions for the average family. "

I disagree with Miss Parker on that one . Many Schutzhund titled dogs live in families along side small children etc. Just recently my SchH3 IPO3 titled home bred  girl had pups  pups and mother where in my kitchen my 18 month old grand daughter sat on the dog bed and the bitch scooted over so she could lay her head in the toddlers lap. I am sure she is not the ONLY dog titled in schutzhund over german lines that display this type of temperament . Her mother was the same way alos german also titled.

My current male was lying  next to me at a recent  cook out after a dog trial  when this little boy of 20 months climped on  him even the judge  took a deep breath  because he saw the dog 1 hour earlier and judged him in protection. I told the little boy to sit next to the dog and not to climp all over him :))    I am very sure that he is not the only strong working dog out there with a clear HEAD . Plus he is awesome to live with :)

He could  but a low keyed Shilo to shame when it comes to staying calm in every day situations :))

comment ... any large dog no matter what breed including the Shilo  an eye must be kept on such large dog when interacting with children .Owners must know their dogs well before allowing interactions with strngers especially children.

Miss Parker created a totally different Shepherd  kudos to her I personally would not own one  . To tarnish  other lines without having statistics on them I find just tasteless  just to make her creation  shine brighter !!!

working line german shepherd dogs are the most versatile German Shepherd in the world  ! and that is a fact !

Sheesh all I did was agree with Pia on how versitile the working lines are.  And Tina I m not mad at anybody.............I bought your book, I said I had respect for you for doing your dream thing and then you jumped on me for loving my working line dog...........Are you defensive or what?

ZDog - I do agree that some of the working dogs look like the old style dogs...but it is really only a few - there has been a serious change in terms of bone, leg length, muzzle length, angulation, and back.  And these dogs that look like Max's dogs are quite often said to be so incorrect they should never be bred....and then you pull in the 'conformationally correct' dogs and wow there is a difference.

I have a huge problem with "conformation" breeders too,  but that's a different arguement all together.  I can look at old pictures and see the working dogs of today and see they are the same dog.  Looking thru his book, I can see that within years after he first established the breed, their was a noticeable change in the "breed" from the founding dogs pictures, but that was the desired affect.  Those dogs and working dogs of today aren't that much different, some yes, change is inevitable, but not that different.  Nowhere have I seen dogs that even resemble a Shilo 100 years ago, let alone being the "original" that she grew up with 40 or 50 years ago

and Tina, Max didn't use guardian breeds, in fact he goes into detail on why they wouldn't have positive effects on the breed he was creating.  So what is your point??  I"m sure some breeders may have tried to use some, but then Max was saying the same things about those breeders as those that tried to infuse wolf blood, etc to the lines.  It's funny to read his words and they sound so much like what a lot of serious breeders have to say about all these other people resorting to gimicks and marketing to sell their dogs.

by scientia on 27 June 2007 - 21:06

with all this agruing many of you GSD fans have missed the point entirely.....

your persious GSD are are quickly being replaced by law enforement agencies all over the country. i personally know that our local law enforcement agencies use malinois and this is a growing trend within law enforcement...oh and by the way...it is also a trend in holland where this certain officer comes from! WHY? because the lines of GSD are too "screwed up". according to these officers a good police qualified GSD is very hard to find, too many problems with temperment, genetic health problem and bad hips due to bad breeding...imagine that. so now law enforcement and the military have turned to other breeds that do not have the inherited problems of the GSD. you guys better wake up and smell the %&$# while you still have a breed!
