Mmm hmmm, German Shepherds, Rotts, Chows, Labs and Mastiffs. All ahead of Pit Bulls in attacks. Akita's are notorious for being brutal as well. Alas the Pit Bull is the one who stands out though. I guess even dogs need a scapegoat.

the pit bull stands out because it is easy to vilify. although many breeds, like the akita, were originally bred for fighting, the APBT is the only one still used for this. while many breeds tout their fighting backround as why these other breeds are so "brave" the general public looks at fighting (in the present) as cruel and inhumane and any animal involved in this activity as a monster.

4pack, where did you get the stats? All of the info I was able to find listed Pit Bills as #1, Rotties #2 and GSD pretty far behind but in third place.  Pits were responsible for a total of 1110 bites, Rotts 409 and GSDs 63.  These stats were compiled in the US and Canada between 1982 and 2006 and these were the totals.

I hate to get back into this , but i don't think the amount of times a breed attacks, but its who they attack, does the stats say if these attacks were against the owner or an intruder? i think the pit is more known out of the breeds as ones who attack their owners or someone for no reason/a child,  they are probably counting all attacks, regarding reason (some of the dog breeds prb most attacks were with good reason, >intruder) i think these facts should be counted into attacks if not already.

According to the CDC, who I don't think has any hidden agenda against any breed, here is the breakdown by recognisable breed of dog, of bite fatalities in the US between 1979 and 1996. Pit bulls account for nearly as many fatalities as the next three breeds combined.

Pit Bulls - 60

Rottweilers - 29

German Shepherd - 19

"Husky" - 14

Malamute - 12

Doberman Pincher -8

I seriously doubt that the numbers have gone down in the last ten years  More likely to have gone up.

IF YOU WOULD LOOK AT THE LINK THAT I KEEP POSTING YOU ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND BY THE WAY, WHEN THEY PUT THINGS IN QUOTATIONS THAT MEANS TYPE "PIT BULL" = PIT BULL TYPE OR LOOKED LIKE A PIT BULL Year Human Population Dog Population Fatal Attacks 1950 151 million 20-22 million 10 1970 203 million 31 million 12 1980 226 million 40 million 15 2000 281 million 55+ million 19 Kory Nelson, Assistant City Attorney for the Denver City Attorney's Office wrote the following statements in a review of a book on Amazon.com*: "...over the course of 20 years, pit bulls were involved in 66 deaths, or 27% of the total. Rottweilers were in involved in 39, or 16%. Every other breed was involved in less than 1% of the deaths." There is no documentation whatsoever to support this claim. Even the CDC study**, which Mr. Nelson touts as the only "true" study does not even remotely support this claim. The CDC study that Mr. Nelson is referring to clearly documents that during their 20 year study, German Shepherd Dogs were responsible for 7% of the deaths, Husky-type dogs; 5%, Malamutes; 4%., etc. (*Fatal Dog Attacks: The Stories Behind the Statistics - Amazon.com book review) (**Sacks JJ, Sinclair, et al. Breeds of dogs involved in fatal human attacks in the U.S. between 1979-1998. WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT!!!!!

I agree the CDC chart was bare. Not much to look at and old. I wouldn't say it was worth the paper it is printed on. Not enough breeds and there has to have been more attacks than that, maybe that is all that were reported?

In recent years I know we have had on infant mauling within 60 miles by a husky  and another dog. Mom was in the bathroom pumping breast milk. I don't know about that. I would defiantly hear if my dogs were ripping my baby to pieces in the next room. This was in an apartment. I have also heard of a ferret or rats nibbling toes off of babies. All the parents fault, neglect or blatant ignorance, whatever you want to call it.

I don't want to blame the pit bull breed because it happens to be owned by ALLOT if idiots. If you ban that breed, the problem will just move on to the next "fashion" dog of the inner cities.

This crap makes me laugh.  It is about time we had a bit of humor on this board.  Next can we argue the per capita angle too?
