OMG..is that real?

I don't know what to really say about the pits...but i do know almost ever child attack i hear about is from a pit,  and is it just me or is it pretty much always children/smaller animals they attack? you almsot never hear about them attacking a grown man or a woman (unless they are trying to get the dog off the child), i've heard of GSD's and other breeds of dogs doing that tho....Maybe thats it, maybe its something about the pits instinct that causes it to go after something smaller....I'm only saying this because of my recent experiences with pits. I believe someone close to me is breeding them and they are dumping the ones they don't want anymore...in the last few months 4 have shown up at my house..the first one, i don't remember what happened to it, i think someone took it home with them....but the second one, a female, scared me..the dog was in no way agressive, but...i have two children a 6 and 7 years old, the dog was fine around them but i still never let them around it...what scared me was when the first time the two neighbor kids came running across the yard to come play with my kids, the dog went after them...she was not mad, she was not scared, she was not backed into a cornered..the kids had never teased her...she was gonna jump them cause it was fun. it seemed fun to her to chase and kill smaller things, like most dogs do to a rabbit or a cat, same reaction to children.. that i think is one of the problems with pits, anything smaller is fair game...people would have looked at that dog and said "oh, its just playing" I ran outside screaming my head off, the dog WAS playing but it was playing a killing game...a few days later the same dog attacked and almost killed my hubby's grandpa's 14 year old 8 lb dog, the entire time it was attacking--the pit was wagging it's tail

"it seemed fun to her to chase and kill smaller things, like most dogs do to a rabbit or a cat, same reaction to children.." First of all it has to do with what the media wants you to hear. Did the pompom that mauled and killed an infant ever make headline news. NO. DOGS ARE ANIMALS, we need to train them how to behave. WE ALSO need to teach children how to react when they come into contact with a dog they are not familiar with. My daughter knows to NEVER run from a dog. If they bark at her she knows to give them a firm NO.

YRofT:  No, I couldn't get it to play, but the still pictures of the head were pretty bad.  Maybe I'm just lucky, but all the PBT's I've ever known are really sweet, funny dogs.  Any kind of breed ban is bad in my opinion.  I think the problem lies with the owners not the dogs in almost all the cases I've read about, there was some sort of neglect or irresponsibility on the part of the humans involved (owners and and/or parents).

LUVGSD: it's exactly hysteria like that, that causes much of the problems with how people view the breed. seems like you are jumping to a big conclussion that these people are dumping their animals into the streets. guess if some strange shepherds show up in the neighborhood you must be getting rid of some of your unwanted dogs as well. RIGHT? dog bites on kids get more news. a greatdane mauled a kid in my area almost killing her got tons of press.bad things happening to kids is awful. but the pit is a terrier and if you ever noticed every terrier will kill other animals. that's what most were bred for. RAT TERRIERS, FOX TERRIERS.... even the sweet looking jack russel. and many dogs even shepherds can let their prey drive take over that's why we don't let kids play with dogs without an adult present. an 8lbs dog isn't much bigger than a cat. yes the owners should have either trained the dog better or kept it from being able to get to the little dog if it's prey drive was high. you admit the dog scared you even though it should no agression to you. that's becaus eof all the bad press on the breed. you truly had no other reason to be afraid of the dog. you even stated that others would have said that the dog was just playing with the girls and you stated that it was "playing a killing game". i think it was your predjudice of the breed that made you think this way and not the actions of the dog. and lets remember that animal agression in a dog does not translate into agression towards people. many loving shepherds have been known to kill cats... but never show the least (unprovoked) agression towards a human. as for whether one would hit a man take a look on you tube or in some schutzhund clubs and see the ones that are doing the sport.

the problem with this breed isn't in with the breed it's with the owners. with all the dog fighting stories... it's made it hard for the responsible owner to own these dogs. the good people get tired of the scrutiny and answering the same ?'s..... and it has driven many to no longer own these fine animals. the news says that drugdealers own these dogs... so every new wannabe drug dealer has to get one... it's a self fulfilling proficy. the news in detroit did a story that stated that dogfighters were cutting the front paws off the dogs so they could get lower to the ground when they fought. turns out the news anchor made that up. unfortunatly within the month the humane society had numerous calls about people now doing this. after all that was what the news said that they should be doing if they wanted a good fighting dog. (obviously that's how they interpreted it).  so when the good people feel they have no choice but to stop owning the breed and you mostly have the dregs of society owning them what do you have? a very powerful breed that doesn't get the socialization, time, love and care they need to be good animals. to be taught not to bite... the future doesn't look to bright for a noble breed that once was used to as a figure head of this counrty.

SUEINCC: All the airlines banned shipment of pits a long time ago.....they have had so many incidents at the cargo pu and so many problems with loading a crate and if a dog is left for a considerable time,,,I think they have to be able to put water into that crate..sometimes the tray for water is off the door and they must open the crate to put water in,,,,the number of dog bites in this country determines what is done with in the air regulationary decissions....

I think  a lot of other pit bull banning has come into play in light of the 6 mauls in recent months, and lots that dont make the newpaper or radio.....

by Angela Kovacs on 10 August 2007 - 21:08

sueincc, It is not luck, it is the truth. Pits really are good dogs. The extreme popularity of the German Shepherd during certain decades did not significantly increase the frequency of fatal attacks. Likewise, the immense popularity of the Pit Bull-type dogs during the last two decades has not significantly increased the frequency of fatal attacks. http://www.nationalcanineresearchcouncil.com/historicCases.asp

aggghhh...i had this whole thingy wrote out and i guess i accidently hit clear...i don't feel like writing again.. so ill just say this...

angela k- quote>DOGS ARE ANIMALS, we need to train them how to behave. WE ALSO need to teach children how to react when they come into contact with a dog they are not familiar with. My daughter knows to NEVER run from a dog. If they bark at her she knows to give them a firm NO.>  how am i suppose to have a stray dog trained...how am i suppose to teach the neighbors kids about dogs...

ramgsd---people dump dogs here all the time, not hysteria, just a sad fact of how people get rid of unwanted dogs around here

Please reread my post, i siad in my first line that i don't know what to say about pit bulls, i just meant that one dog, that one experience with that pitbull because the subject was on pit bulls , you will see where i said the other ones that showed up were fine, not prejudce of  the breed...actually my friend kept one of two pit puppies that we found on side of the road, no houses near, to young to walk there , how do you think these pups got there? anyway the one she kept she still has and it is a very sweet dog. so i do think how a dog ANY dog is raised has a lot to do with it

by Angela Kovacs on 10 August 2007 - 23:08

Tell your neighbors that they need to talk to their kids about stray dogs. If your neighbors don't want to hear it then I am sorry. If you know who is dumping the dogs or have an idea, call animal control.
