WestDog1

2.5yr old, I know the positioning is off but they were accepted by OFA

How did you get copies of digital radiographs?

BTW, WestDog1, this dog will definitely certify OFA "good" --possibly "excellent!

You ask the vet to burn them on  CD for you. They do the same for OFA to send. Of course not all vets have digital, we drive to a different vet for x-rays.

Very nice hips, West Dog. Good to excellent. BTW you dog must not have had a decent  BM for several days prior to that xray .

By the way, if your vet doesn't do digital for an extra $5.00 OFA will return your x-rays, that's how I got Dante's hips and elbow x-rays

Just for general info, if you want OFA to send you the x-rays back as fillyone stated be sure and put the extra $ 5.00 along with a note attached stating that you want the x-rays back. If they miss it the first time you are out of luck.

Fillyone, thanks , that's good to know. Now we've seen 2 GSD's with excellent OFA ratings, so that gives us a better idea of what OFA is looking for in this breed.  It looks like they want about 3/4 of the ball seated in the socket and the Norberg on  Dante's xray is well over the 105 degree most consider the gold standard for normal hips..  Congrats on the excellent rating; only a small percentage of GSD's ever get that from OFA.

Regarding DH and the purpose of the thread...I'm just as clueless as most but I will take a stab as that is the point here.

My main concern is the size of the ball compared to the socket and also looks like some wear and tear done to the socket already. The hips look seated in there fairly well but I wonder in time how and if that would change. I would guess Borderline to Mild.

My luck they came back Excellent. That's why I don't work for OFA. LOL

Blitzen,

Dante prelimed as "good" at 14 months (when he was neutered) and then the excellent at 2 years.

He is out of two "Fair" dogs and has a littermate that is moderate.  Sadly no other pups from his litter are on the OFA website so I don't know how the rest of the litter faired

Would I do things differently in purchasing a puppy if I knew then what I know now?  Probably (2 fair parents).  Am I glad I have Dante?  Thrilled!
