by Gshprdsrul on 30 December 2007 - 03:12

Hey Female 46...Retired police officer went out on disability after rupturing a disk in my neck. Mother of three misfit GSDs all bad hips but we get by with the help of an awsome vet. I love them wouldn't trade them for anything. Thunder 12 my first Shepherd I got him the day they told me I had to retire. He is my best friend. Then I have Tyr 3 yr old female and Luger 1-1/2 yr old male. They keep me running literally. The training has fallen off lately hurt my back again. They have run off on me twice in the last two weeks..Amazing how you forget about your pain as you are chasing your babies down the street....LOL Have 2 teenage boys one is joining the police dept and the other is going into architecture. Been divorced (happiy) for 10 years. I can't seem to find anyone that loves my animal friends as much as I do. They are a heck of a lot better company then most people are anways..

Shelley,

Your story was moving. The consistent theme in all of it is your ability to survive and look forward. These are valuable and rare traits, you can be proud of yourself for them. I also have ADD but did not find out until two years ago. Went to a psychiatrist about 10-12 years ago and he thougt I had depression, so he put me on a bunch of antidepressants. None of them helped in the long run and I became increasingly more demoralized. But I made it my business to read, talk to other professionals, listen to colleagues, and investigate new treatments. Then one day I was at my chiropractor's  office and he mentioned how his autistic son was so out of control at school he took him to the Amen Clinic in Reston, Virginia for a brain scan. The results showed he had some overactive areas in his brain and he was low on specific supplements. A program was devised for him including medication, supplements, diet changes, sleep recommendations, regular physical excercise, and a routine for doing his homework and chores. The kid ended up scoring in the 99th percentile on standardized achievement testing and his aggression disappeared over time. In other words he was transformed.

Anyway the chiropractor suggested I give the Amen Clinic a call. I did and they did a brain scan on me. Come to find out the doctor said I had Overfocused ADD. That is, when I engage in an activity I am completely absorbed. I am unaware of anything or anyone else at that moment. Troube is when I would finally finish an activity or tire of it I would be in a fog. If someone pestered me or pushed me when I was in that state I would blow up like a volcano. The doctor said my type of ADD occurred in 10% of all ADD/ADHD people and it was most commonly seen in jet fighter pilots. And he told me to no surprise on my part that I did NOT have depression. What he said was I had Clint Eastwood depression: I might kill the other guy, he might kill me, so what? The point is I relate to the struggle you went through  with this condition. But there is help out there and it can be different for those who suffer from it. Now I get twice as much done in half the time. And I know the meds are a good fit for me because when I forget to take them I am a different person and everyone notices. Luckily my friends at work have the same condition and they support me when I occasionally forget the meds.

Like you I have a primevil connection with dogs, but particularly with Shepherds. I am on my 4th one now. My first was Max, a black and tan, 130 pound obsessed protector. I used to walk through alleys just to watch people freak out when they got close and saw him. Then I got two long haired shepherds from the same litter and they were obsessed with protecting each other! One of them died in September due to spinal disease. He was five. I was in mourning for six months, and even now I get sad thinking of him. I purchased a pick of the litter King shepherd in February and he is just fantastic. Hopefully the cross breeding will provide a heartier constitution. His grandfather is Bustah of Chateau de Chief. He is the winningest King Shepherd in the American Rare Breed Association's history of competitions. He weighed 156 pounds and was pictured in James Fogles' book "The Encyclopedia of Dogs." His father is Dakota of Chateau de Chief and he is very dark and weighs 140 to 145 pounds. I named my puppy Angus and I hope to show him in the ARBA competitions. But he will also get obedience training as well as training in agility and protection like I did with my two long haired sheperds. It's all fun and it gives me more opportunities to bond with my dogs.

I wish you mad success in your business ventrue in Pa. I'd be interested in the development as you go through this journey. People with ADD/ADHD are contagious in their enthusiasm. This is why others are so drawn to them. And they are great at dealing with lots of variables and/or chaos. Th
