What do you do when a young (under one year) dog has very loose stool?  I'd like to hear alternatives to 24 hours of fasting.  Thanks.

Rule out the obvious first, cocci, internal parasites ect..., then look at the food- is it something that's not agreeing with his/her stomache? Has he always had loose stools? Have you changed anything( moved, added or taken away people/other dogs, changed living arrangements)? When in doubt always consult a vet, rule out EPI...........

If it's nothing medically wrong then try any one of these

1) Probios

2) Forti flora

3) Propectalin tablets

Do a search and you will find all of them.. good luck.

How old is the pup? Very young pups can become dehydrated very quickly from diarrhea. The younger the pup, the more urgent it is to get it treated. For pups that are still nursing, I'd recommend pedialyte to replace fluids and electrolytes. And, of course, a trip to the vet with a stool sample. Sample mom's poop too, to make sure it's nothing contagious.

For older dogs, I've had my vet recommend boiled rice mixed with ground beef.

Fecal tests are inexpensive if your pup gets worse get it in to the vet. Try canned pumpkin or applesauce if stools are loose.

Definately rule out what was suggested. It is a common remedy also in Germany to use an herbal Black Tea to stop diarrhea. Take the puppy off of food for 24 hours, get some live culture yogurt from a health food store and mix it with Minute rice, feed this for 48 hours after fasting and then start to gradually add the dog food back in. It could be that depending on what kind of puppy food you are feeding that it is causing the problem. If you are feeding a German Shepherd I highly recommend Royal Canin Large Breed Puppy. I was using Innova and did not have diarrhea however I did have a rather loose stool and once I switched everything straightened itself out. I also highly recommend getting some Conklin Fastrack Gel. This product works wonders, we have used it with our puppies and dogs for nearly 10 years. I hope this helps.

Thanks e1.  I am on my way out to shop for this stuff and will call vet if he is still loose tomorrow.

He's 5 months, 60 lbs, so not a baby.

I've been feeding rice and canned turkey whenever he has loose stool and I am beginning to think he does it on purpose to go back to that when I switch him to kibble.
