The truth outs again.  That's why you think you can charge $1,000 for a rescue.  Your "TD" likes the dog.  So not only are you greedy, but quite a bit creepy and sick too.

by EchoMeadows on 30 October 2007 - 05:10

Sueincc once again YOU MISS the point,  the TD likes the dog meaning.... She has come a long way from her previous behavior issues,  "unsocialized"   WOW you really need it ALL spelled out don't you ??

Echo,

Try to train and title the dog yourself.  The time you spend working and training the dog over a year will give you some insight if the dog is breed worthy.  For example how the dog handles stress, its drives etc.

Jeez, this is a crazy thread.... Echo, I think it is great that you save dogs from shelters and adopt them out, if you work at a shelter can't you get a good deal on getting her spayed?  I rescue dogs as well, I have a female boxer with me right now that was going to be PTS-she whelped 11 pups who were all stolen when they were thought to be pit bulls-then the owner was evicted and had to live in the mission and the dog was only getting fed what he didn't eat.  Anyhow-when I got her she was scared of her own shadow, skinny as a rail, infested with parasites and had some major skin issues.  Now she has gained some weight and will be spayed as her other issues have cleared up.  Long story short, I have several months into this dog and well over $400 but I will just charge a fee of $150 or so because I think that is fair as long as she gets the home she deserves.  Seeing the dog's physical and mental changes is worth it to me.

VBK9,   Unfortunately here where we are there are no vets in that do reduced spay/neuters NOT even for the Shelter,  Much less for our Rescue that is very much Separated from the Shelter...Which is why here at the shelter they have done it the way they have for 12 years.... If we can get them spayed/neutered before adoption ( IF = are the funds available)  Then we do,  BUT if we can't they are adopted out on a 30 day contract the people spay/neuter and provide us with that proof or WE the shelter can take the dog back !!!   People have been very good, because we CLEARLY explain this to them...

In a PERFECT world YES we would be able to spay/neuter ALL Rescue/Shelter Dogs,  Unfortunately this world is not yet perfect.... I'm like you I have put countless hours, effort, training, vetting, into Rescue dogs.... Some of them have been adopted out for as little as 50.00,  others as much as 300. to 500.   This particular dog we have gone the XTRA mile on,  we have had her for over a year,  put alot of training into her,  and want to MAKE sure that whoever is interested in her HAS a COMMITMENT and  SERIOUSLY is willing to evaluate the truths of they're lifestyle to INSURE that she is going to the RIGHT home.... the 1,000.00 tag on her helps me weed out a few lookers, and saves me some time,  If I am UNethical and wrong for trying to save some of my time well then so be it I guess.... I have over 50 dogs in the shelter under my care and then I have my own dogs....  I get 30 to 50 emails a day on dogs in the shelter and 1 to 3 a day on my own dogs.... Shame on me for NOT wanting to waste  my time on someone who THINKS they MIGHT want to take a dog like Sudey on...  She is NOT for the average home and the price tag Clearly reflects that....  But of course NO one wanted to see that all they wanted to say is Echo is Greedy,  Echo is Crazy,  Echo is Horrible..... blah blah blah same old Crap New Day.... Anyway there is the explanation,  I already said this once but it may have been burried on the other thread...

VBK9  Sincerely want to thank you for the work you do in Rescue it's OFTEN a Very THANKLESS Job,  and it's a good thing we don't count on ThankYou's for doing it or NO one would.... :-)    Keep up the great work !!

OK, so I looked at this thread as about charging 1000 for a rescue dog right???? Nearly all the rescues I know charge money for the dogs they place. A lot of the smaller rescues are actually making money from rescues. I know that when we were doing rescue we charged X amount to cover us "just in case". We didn't take in any nutters, and started to see a profit from our adventure almost right away. Because we were able to go to the shelters and hand pick, as they were always full, we didn't take any of the crazy dogs with nerve problems ect ect. Without meaning to, we turned a profit. I can only imagine the profit other rescues were making. I see nothing wrong with it. We were willing to keep the dogs for life if we could not get them a home. It just didn't really work that way, somehow they all got homes. So very popular to get a rescue dog. As a kennel it was advantageous, as they brought the dog to us for boarding. I thought it worked out well, and since when should rescue people not make a profit?????

by zdog on 30 October 2007 - 18:10

I see nothing wrong with training some dogs and making some money at all.  BUT calling yourself a rescue to paly on people's emotions to make some money??? I'd say its a little on the un-ethical side.  IF you were rescuing, you'd take in the dogs, no matter the condition, do your work and make sure they found a home.  Rescuing is philanthropy.  Philanthropists give back not expecting anything, especially monetary, in return.

Getting cheap dogs from the shelter and doing some training to sell them later is not rescuing IMO.  Maybe call yourself a dog re-conditioner or used dog salesman, but not a rescue.
