Bea, I am totally confused now.The copy of the SV rules on the internet say:

4.2.4 Litter Size

A bitch may not rear more than eight puppies from her own litter. Additional puppies are to be raised by means of a nurse (foster mother)...........If the bitch has more that 8 puppies, she may be bred again no earlier than 6 months after the whelping date.

Do I have an outdated copy of these rules?

I would be interested to find out whether there are any discernable differences between the puppies raised with the mother and the puppies raised with the foster mother from 10 days to 8 weeks.  I ask because there has been discussion regarding the "formative" early days of puppy socialization developement.  Also many feel the bitch is perhaps  as important for her mothering skills as she is for here genes.

To all,

I'm sorry I didnt have a dictionary in my hand when I defined culling.   But I grew up in the country uncivilized.

Culling does mean select....out.   The only puppies I can remember culling were small and sickly, you knew they wouldnt make it, or one that was injured.  I dont think I ever culled one cause it didnt look like the standard at one day old.

Pidgeons they were culled for many reasons, chickens, turkeys to.  A culled calf ended up beef.  I never culled a horse.  I raised fox and mink and had to weed out imperfections at time's.  Cats in the barn gone ferrel were culled when they over populated to avoid starvation.  Over the years I have had to put down various animals for various reasons, thats one of the responcabilities of raising animals.  If you think its easy or fun you dont understand at all.  I love and respect animals and think they deserve dignity and as little sufering as possible. I take it seriously.

I am not afraid of the word kill. Man kills everyday for reasons other than humane and I make no apoligies.  Man makes war, what does that say about humans.   I believe culling can also mean sell, dont breed, and in my neck of the woods people still dump animals.  Yes I would like to cull a few people sometimes.  I have seen unwanted animals starving to death, its offensive to my soul.

I hope we could discuss culling, selective breeding and euthanasia without such emotion...

Brent.

Selective breeding, culling, euthanasia is not the same as breeders hand killing puppies to save money, Brent.

I think you have misunderstood my original post.  Its ok, this really isnt the best way to communicate.

No one is killing pups to save money.

What would be a good reason for putting down your own animal rather than taking it to a vet?

I do believe that breeders of all animals sell crap sometimes that shouldn't be brought into the world in the first place.  Be it dogs, or goldfish.

I believe pet owners who arent responcible are the reason shelters are over flowing.

I think animals deserve better stewardship by us.

OK,  you haven't answered my question, but I'm going to agree to disagree with you and move on.

I cant take every animal I own to the vet.   Not on the farm...  My vet would think I was nuts if I brought him a chicken or a rabbit to put down.    Also, when it comes to my dogs over the years. I can tell you they know were your taking them and why. I can tell you they feel fear and dispair.

I can only tell you I feel better about what I do for many reasons.   I will tell you I wonder what will happen to me when I no longer want to go on.   I wont be put in a place with strangers to wait out my death.   I would really hope for my own dignity.

The hell with society and what they believe to be true for me.

Yes Blitzen, I agree to disagree.  This is an emotional issue that one person cant force onto another.

thank you.
