Shelley Strohl

by Shelley Strohl on 21 December 2007 - 17:12

I spent a couple of hours with Max last night at the shelter. They are treating his ears, thank goodness, but the director wasn't there so no decision about letting me pull him. They prefer whomever is going to take the dog to train for K9 pull him themselves rather than let me ferry him. At least he is safe at this point, off the list for euthanasia. I had a bad blow out on the turnpike on my way home, had to be towed home, no way to get it fixed without help so its sitting down the hill on the training field in the snow till my husband can get to it, probably not till tomorrow, so I can't visit Max today. I did fill out paperwork for adoption, but don't know if they'll approve it yet. With Xmas on Tuesday I am thinking nothing will happen till after the holiday, but have my fingers crossed. Thanks all, SS

The shelter has approved Molly for pulling Max. She can't get there till maybe Monday, but they will be open for a couple of hours on Xmas Eve, will release him to her no problem. There are quite a few law enforcement/corrections people interested in Max at this point. I'm sure she will have no trouble placing him in short order so he can enjoy life working with a permanent handler. SS

Charles Wallace, the investigator who contacted me about Max, is coming by the house this afternoon. I will give him the donation from the nice lady in Florida that will allow us to save Max so it will be waiting for Molly when she gets to the shelter, just in case there's more wrong with my old van than I know yet and/or I can't be there in person when he's pulled. Molly's driving a long way and I don't want anything to go wrong, don't want to waste her time with everything not all set. Looks at this point like good-boy Max has his two front feet out the front door of the shelter and the other two set to leap over the threshold on Xmas Eve. He'll be in heaven when he gets a load of what Molly feeds, probably the first decent meal he's had in years, the nice heated indoor-outdoor run "with a pastoral view" of the farm, immaculate floors with soft blankie to sleep on, a BATH, continued care for his ears, way cool birds cheerfully chirping away in the front office, and a nice lady who UNDERSTANDS HIM. :) Molly runs a really nice facility, conscientious to every detail. Max will think he is in heaven on earth. SS

A little history: I got in an auto accident at night about 6-7 yrs. ago in Lehigh Co., got knocked unconscious, transported to the hospital, totaled van towed, etc. They took my old Onyx to the very same shelter till I was released from the hospital later that morning and got a ride to go get him. I swear my dear Onyx was behaving just as badly, probably worse, till he recognized me when I got to his kennel door. Normally no one not on staff is allowed back in the kennel block he (an now Max) was in, likely reserved for dangerous dogs... The entire staff was terrified of my otherwise normal working dog, clearly an unhappy camper in his situation. No one would go near him, stuck themselves to the walls when I led him out wagging his tail and making "happy" noises from the minute he saw me, platzed contentedly and rolled over hoping to get his belly rubbed while I filled out the paperwork, once again happy with the world and everyone in it, reunited with his human. I was pretty new in the area. What if I had been more seriously injured and no one he/I knew "ith appropriate credentials" had been around to/able to spring HIM for the 10 day holding period? They would surely have labeled my best-ever-heart-dog a dangerous animal and put him to sleep ASAP. This is one reason I am working so hard to free Max. There but for the grace of God... SS

Poor Max may have to spend Xmas in the slammer due to very reduced business hours at the shelter tomorrow. May not be till Wednesday Molly can get there to pull him. Too bad, but its better than spending Xmas in a plastic bag. Charles has been making the 1 hr. (one way) trek to visit Max even on his days off. Brought him a nice blankie to sleep on, much appreciated by a dog with callouses from concrete I'm sure. I'm thinking our boy won't have to spend all the holiday alone... ;) SS

Patches / Ben, To Quote you: "I think it is great that you want to help this dog out. I think one of the best ways to help all dogs out, would be to get a new humane officer. I would like to know how he tested this dog for its protection skills?" I am the Investigator. If it was not for me Maximus would have been put down on Monday. If it wasn't for my pigeon German and the responce I got from him his Christmas would have been in a cooler. Am I offended by your comments, personally NO... Because I have Maximus laying next to me in my office as I type this reply. I am sure Shelly can verify I have a serious history with dogs and she has meet and worked with my Giant Schnauzer Gandolf, who too was a save from the agency where I am employed. I am only glad that fate placed Maximus in front of me rather than someone else. I will be sad when he leaves to go with Molly on Wednesday, I am also sure he will shed a similar doggie tear. He has become a good friend in a very short while. To all others on this forum, I can't thank you all enough. Shelly, I am honored to have meet you and I am looking forward to working with you in the near future, Thank you for all you have done. From my friend Maximus... Many Barks of Happiness and Joy for your Holidays. From me to you... Peace be with you all, Happy Holidays Charles Wallace
