One thing about AOL users though: The IPs are shared by lots of users and will be different everytime the users sign into AOL, at least the last three or five digits.

I agree that one can generate several IP addresses just by using other IPS's from the same computer (or pair of computers) to surf the web and access this site. But really, who wants to do that unless they have something to hide? And eventually, they will exhaust the individuality of their various AOL, Yahoo, Comcast, Cox, etc. accounts.

It does make a troll or lurker easy to spot, as eventually they will slip and fail to cover their tracks. At that end, everyone here will know who they are. So if someone really wants to go through that much trouble, then give it a try. You will fail to maintain your disguise eventually.

Oli-thanks again,

Oli,

Moderation, contrary to a number of posters' opinions, would be most welcome.  It would increase the quality of the posts and help remove unwanted and unnecessary posts, or move them to the proper sections of the board, if so created.

For those users who want added services, such as perhaps classifieds, enhanced searches, special posting icons, you can give them "enhanced services" and collect a fee to help defray your costs on infrastructure....servers, storage, etc.

In my opinion, moderation would be great.

You may also consider "locking" threads rather than deleting them.  I have had a couple of threads deleted that I considered valuable and have proven more so over time and others have asked for after suffering the same fate I did.

The IP is not the registered chip number linked to the main user's name and address at and by his webserver.  Anyone with the proper tracing software can access this chip number and bingo the poster with multiple IPs is tracked.  Anonymizer services do nothing really to delete this chip number and always make all their info available on demand to private corporate network security folks or law enforcement.  Almost all if not all anonymizer servicves are run by LE anyway (eg sources & methods). Harddrives and bios chips "may" give off hidden, imbedded id numbers only decodable by law enforcement.

Besides this, there is key logger analysis software, syntax analysis software, and many more ways to track a person's postings on the web.  Rumor has it that microsoft, and all chip manufacturers and hardware manufacturers are very cozy with LE and intel, very cozy.  You fill in the spaces here. Let your imagination run off a bit and you will probably be right. Do I think most of us already have key logger software on our computers?  Maybe, but I wouldn't say for sure if I knew.  One minor slip up even amoung the world's best hackers is all it takes and they all get caught within 1 year max.  So better just to respect others and do the right thing when one posts and uses the internet.

Oli, please stay on top of this and do whatever you must to keep this forum working well with no abuse so that the folks driven off that have important, hard to get info to share come back and feel the site is worthwhile.

well, i don't have a clue as to all the technical stuff; i'm a neo-luddite i guess. but, what ever it takes to keep this site fairly reasonable is okay by me. i've learned a good amount and, i hope to learn alot more from this site from the good breeders, trainers and just plain dog people here. oli, hope the new year sees your family (with the new addition) happy and healthy.

Hi OLI,

I agree with the idea of monitoring the forum for the reason you gave. There are a couple of problems I have with posting the IP address. First I can reboot my modem/ router and get a new one at any time. If I really wanted to I could spoof another one so that information would be useless. But the real issue is security. I will post this time but it may be my last post. Publishing an Ip address for all to see exposes my home network to hackers.  I think you know this and I am suprised you would do this without some kind of advanced warning and time for others to chime in on the realities of what this can cause.

Please stop this practice as this is a very good Forum but posting an IP address of your users is not only a huge security risk but it opens you up to liabilty. If a hacker data mined all the IP address from this site then started hacking all the users the result cold be very bad.

For those that do not know posting your IP address opens the door to hackers and gives them a door into your computer. If your security isn't top notch you will soon be open to hacks.

I will make this post then go turn off my modem and router until tomorow.

Oli please reconsider this practice or I will be forced to leave this forum for security reason and any one that understands why I have left will leave as well.

I have one username here, I posted my email address and have never flamed or spamed. Please stop this practice

The IP addresses being posted will NOT solve any of these problems. I just happened to take a look at another thread I have been interested in to see what has been posted since yesterday afternoon. When I looked at the thread, I noticed, someone else and I have the same IP address. I actually know the other person and know we are not the same person. We actually live several states away from each other. We are both known enough by many to know we are not the same person either. Yet, if we put so much stock in the new "feature" we have to believe that the other poster and I are the same. Or we are sitting at the same computer.

Additionally, if given a couple of hours, I could hack everyone's computer with the information that is now attached to everyone's sign in name. If I can do it, believe me, there are a thousand other people who could do it. Of course, I am NOT going to hack anyone's computer.

This "feature" some of you are so happy with, has now put your computer and more importantly your personal safety at risk. I think the intention was admirable, to some degree. However, computers and people are at risk, AND as already proven, people will jump to conclusions that will most likely cause additional strife on this board.

It is one thing for Oli to have this information or for moderators to have access. In this day and age, it is very easy to track someone through the computer. To make it easier, is not always the best way.

Too bad we even have to consider additional avenues because adults cannot behave as adults.
