Trying to get opinions on Bil Jac food...I have been feeding my dog this, and her coat feels good. But yesterday I heard that Bil Jac's was once a good food but not anymore because there is molasses in it, which is bad for the teeth.

Is this correct?

We have a recipe on this site by Mirasmom  ?  and it has molasses in it   the Meatballs with rawhamburger..dontknow why Molasses is bad   ...White sugar is terrible for all of us   but we eat it...Brown sugar is better...Molasses is used in a lot of recipes...for humans.....   My friends in Corsicana. Tex.,  ,,personal trainers of German Shepherds who were in Schutzhund , for years...Greg and Debra Miller,,,use Bil Jac  frozen and bagged....and they also use added suppliments with it....

I also know they did put Menadione in theres and after the truth came out about it....Schutz people bombarded them  and they took it out......

A lot of the Dallas club members use Bil Jac   frozen....

Molasses is a very healthy raw food.  Very good for dogs and people!

T' banana might be t' potassium poster child, but for potency, molasses humiliates t' phallic fruit. Just 2 Tbsp (1 oz) provide 410mg o' potassium. In Canines, Potassium be found within tissue cells and be important in cellular activity; a deficiency causes muscle weakness and heart and kidney lesions. Potassium has been used t' treat everythin' from Renal problems t' epilepsy in canines. Basically t' guy be suggestin' that we really need 2,000 mgs o' potassium in our diet daily t' function properly. His avenue o' attack be based on humans usin' synthetic soils t' grow our crops which procude fruits with lackin' nutrients, which Arr! with 100%.  Me really believe extra Potassium would be o' great benefit t' any Canine under stress, recoverin' from Surgery, in a Conditioning Program, and a must for any canine on prescribed Lasix for pulmonary, or any type o' edema.Below be a long read regardin' humans, but if your bored it be pretty interestin

Aye! t' Molasses for Potassium, and t' gelatin for joints aye! Gelatin be just a processed version o' a structural protein called collagen that be found in many animals, includin' humans. Collagen actually makes up almost a third o' all t' protein in a animal's body. It be a big, fibrous molecule that makes skin, bones, and tendons both strong and somewhat elastic.

You may want to check the ingredients for BHA/BHT as Bil Jac used to use it all the time. This can be deadly as it was researched some time ago in Europe specifically in Germany and was found to be cancer causing preservatives. I used to feed it and liked it until I found out about this. I lost my first German dog to cancer caused by these preservatives at the age of 5.

It is incredable how many of us have lost our German Shepherds to cancer caused by the food we were feeding them. In a lot of cases Vet recommended.

Hi Yellowrose,

I don't think that would be my recipe, I only put molasses in my home-made baked beans,
and the dogs certainly don't get any of them (learned the hard way!)

Anyway, I now feed everyone Canidae, inbetween feeding a raw diet, I had one dog with dry skin & hot
spots, her fur even had a course texture, after switching to Canidae, her fur grew in softer & thicker,
it was such a remarkable change, I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes!www.vonryansgermanshepherds.com/whatmydogseat.htm

Over the years I have feed my dogs, Science diet, Blue Seal, Purina, Purina One, Exceed, Iams,
EuKanuba, Pedigree, and boy am I happy with Canidae All Life Stages!

Oh! I almost forgot, I was feeding Bil-Jac not to long ago, the pellet dry form, but the dogs stools were
not so easy to pick up, to mushy, I think it's too rich, but probably good mixed in with other food.

I only feed Bil Jack frozen when I'm trying to bulk up my dogs.  I mix it with their Solid Gold kibble but once I see them at the weight I like I do away with the Bil Jack as I hear it's not the best choice for GSD's on a regular basis.  The dogs love it though.

Gosh, I'm not a regular on this list but can't help this post.

Fed frozen biljac for about 20 years now, sorry I'm dating myself.  Cancer in the dogs is more a genetic problem than a nutritional one as we know it follows certain bloodlines well.  Sorry for this.

Pretty well digested, frozen biljac.  Very good for weaned puppies too.

call hte company and ask why they add the cane molasses for your answer.  It is either mineral related, taste or added to help make an extruded product stick together.

good luck with the food
