ocpd426, the Germans have forms they glue into the ears when they have a problem...finding them here may prove futile but others have offered several substitutes that might work. That is a big pup...I have a 19 month old male at the upper limit height-wise and I'd be surprised if he weighs 80 lbs. I'd be interested in your pups's pedigree and breeder if you'd care to share it...you can email me directly at skyd1ve@hotmail.com. I live just down the road from you in Indy.

ocpd426, in so far as the weight issue with your puppy, if you can _easily_ see the outline of the second or third _last_ rib when the pup is standing and breathing normally, then he is not fat..but if he is similar to a roll of sausage, he's f a t :) how about your pups breeder? will they offer you any assistance with his ears? what did they have to say about the ears coming up? good luck with the pup.

Breeder is coming in town today or tomorrow to see pup. They said never had a pup in there breeding that had bad ears. They checked on this litter of 12 pups all pups ears are up but ours. What luck

Cheers people, Does anyone have any ethical qualms with glueing ears etc, as suggested? Present deceptive picture to prospective buyer later as to true features of the animal? Couldn't such interference also be applied to other superficial defects? Similarly, what's view on artificial additives to food to promote rich colour? Just thought I 'd throw that in!

by deutsche-schaferhund on 05 December 2004 - 01:12

patrishap, We agree with your concern about glueing ears etc. We feel that the ears should stand on their own, without help. Same goes for color additives. The list goes on, males that need "help" to breed, bitches that need to be "forced" to be bred. Just our two cents worth.

Cheers Deutsche, I'm far from saint, but wouldn't do it! Hardly does Breed a favour! What's real aim?: Money. Didn't realise I felt so strongly about it! How come posts above all seem to accept it as done thing? Regard.

Cheers Peter! Have you realized that you have had a long-term effect on this board? We are all "Cheers" ing! I too am a purist but would have to admit faced with the problem would like to try to have my GSD have a prick ear as opposed to floppy and would likewise be looking for solutions. I personally feel that ear weakness is more of a problem than an erect ear that tilts inward or outward. But atleast, we are not chopping away at them as is the case with some other breeds "Am Staffs", "Boxers", "Dobies". The ear inserts and glueing is a lesser evil. If I knew I was breeding to a dog that had this problem as a puppy, I would probably look elsewhere. Because the problem is alittle to prevalent for my taste. Terrible with the American Lines. Almost appears that all pups have inserts. Sunny
