 This is a very good thread, but it does go quite well with the thread about the bottleneck phenomena that is occurring with our showlines and possibly with the working lines. I do agree that many of the showline dogs are too heavily inbred. For instance my female to me is beautiful you all have critiqued her several times and I apprecaite all of them. She is heavily inbred on Ursus Batu lines, she is extremely cowhocked. I do feel that we should incorporate some new blood back into the showlines. Again I am an advocate for using DDR lines to expand the bloodlines. I think it is important to not be totally closed minded about the issues with our breed, and we do need to come up with ways to improve this issue.

aristian,

I have to repeat myself - you are CLUELESS! And everybody who knows me would tell you that I usually never ever loose my cool and get nasty. But I make an exception for you!

You want to see a cowhocked dog: www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/picturegallery/6223.html ? Go ahead and scroll down to the last photo, the front picture. Her rear legs make a perfect triangle! A true froggy style!

And before I am done with you, I would also like to tell you that you are disgrace to our breed. By looking through your posts, I realized how you insult international judges and accomplished dogs (example: Vegas). I have to ask you again if you ever visited the German Sieger Show, or if you even went to shows in your country?  You really distort my view on Pakistan, because I always thought that Pakistanis are well mannered people.

And thank you for your lecture on what the founder of this breed had in mind! What a valuable lesson to learn for a newbie like me from an expert like you! Could you quickly outline your accomplishments here?

Please go ahead and title your dog. I am sure you will keep this board informed on her progress.

Yours in the breed!

Aris, your dog is a nightmare going away it is so severely cowhocked (a simple recessive trait).  No breed warden would ever give it a KK1.  This is a serious fault and harms its agility and efficiency of movement. Just because many of the top showline and working line GSDs are very incorrect like yours does not mean there are not a substantial number that are correct to the standard.  There are several top profung dogs which have ideal conformation too.  Take Elute Mohnwise (spelling?) for one, there are many others.   And each year at the German Sieger Show or the NASS, there are numerous GSDs which have correct construction and agility, sound movem,ent and correct working temperament.  It always comes down to the breeder to breed properly and select out dogs to show which are sound moving and true to the standrad as much as possible.  Long lower thighs and sickle hocks and cowhocks are a serious aberration.

This video was in the UK i guess made by the BBC.

There is also a club called the "German Shepherd Dog League" who is highly against over angulation and hocking.

To answer when will this quit///that is easy when you stop breeding for a look and only breed healthy, intelligent dogs that  can work some of you call them coyotes...I call them the trrue German Shepherd working line was it was intended for. As far as mixed breeds being unhealthy they if run loose to breed can become inbreed of course but ninety percent of mixed breeds do not have all the health issues of the inbreed show lines. People if they trully love dogs would not do this sort of concentrated breeding to get a blue ribbon running around a ring. The dogs suffer with so many health issues I wish the person with the leash in their hand could have some of the aliments the dogs they produce do what justice.

I've just finished reading this book, not on GSD's mind you, but this context seems to eerily represent the plight of the breed, along with most other pedigreed dogs who have lost their purpose;

"Never ask me to alter a weapon merely in order to improve it's appearance. A weapon is a tool, and if it is beautiful, then it is beautiful because it is useful. A sword that could not fulfill its function would be ugly to my eyes no matter how fair its shape, not even if it were adorned with the finest jewels and the most intricate engraving." - Brisingr.

I think ALL dog breeders, owners and most importantly buyers should see this.  Yes, the footage has the not so subtle nuances of "anti-breeder" sentiment and of course people get title hungry but I feel the power to change this is with the purchaser.  If the buyers had higher expectations of the sellers, it would make the sellers  more accountable or make them less money.  More accountable=more conscientious about what they are putting together to make sellable pups or Less Money=educated buyers making informed decisions.... (I'll elaborate here-) & not buying puppies & dogs from people who have nice paper, great records but crap animals   I also feel it is not only the right but the responsibility of the informed to pass this type of information along to the less informed.  Yeah, here were all mostly focused on our GSD's but what about your auntie or neighbor who wants a pug, a cavi, a lab, etc...?  It is all relevant in my book.
