For those who have bought adult dogs from Germany or elsewhere in Europe, how did you decide to pay $1000's to a stranger faraway? Are you sure you have the dog advertised?

Are there a list of sellers who are reputable? Is there an intermediary that you can trust?

Based on my own experience, if I were going to spend that much on a dog in Europe, I'd invest in a plane ticket and fly over to see the dog with my own 2 eyes, and then bring the dog back with me if satisfied.

If you find that elusive list of reputable sellers, let us all know.  However, I would be extremely surprised if you found folks to agree on who those people are.

Good luck and be careful!

When we made our first overseas purchase I was nervous at first. But we asked around to other GSD owners we knew that had imported dogs. We heard great experiance from fellow friends and co-workers who had imported from Eurosport K-9. So we bought and imported our first dog from there and since have imported 4 more dogs from there.

I would just say the biggest thing is do your research and stay true to your insticint if you feel something isn't right it more then likely isn't.

Research, ask questions.  I've bought one pup (Germany) and one adult (Netherlands).  Both transactions went well.

My brother-in-law is a Czech who speaks German as native language. Are there different dialects of German? Would he be able to talk to anyone in Germany? I will ask him, but we are not close so I want to know first.

By doing research and getting to know the breeder of my dogs. It also helps my husband is a retired police k9 instructor from Germany. If you need some help I'll be glad to try and help

About the German language, if your brother speaks German as native language he will have no problems.  About one year ago I was working in Germany (not related to GSD, but to research) and there are many dialects, but the German taught in schools is a standard (as the standard Spanish or standard English) and is understood by all Germans, even if they speak a regional dialect.

Hint and words to the wise: Go thru someone here that has imported before..  A trainer or a competitor with a reputation ..... Call them and say,,I want a dog  with this  and this , and how much you want to spend. THey will make the calls and consult you and  you will get your dog..Im speaking of working dogs, Dont know about the showline. A trip to Germany or Netherlands is fruitless if you dont have the contacts , give you by someone in the know...anyone can advertise and make an impression., its the honesty that gets left out.

Research the seller. Research the dogs.

People in the horse industry think nothing of buying horses of far greater value w/o seeing before purchase.

I sold $40K horse to a buyer in Luxembourg with far far less hassle, less pain & agony than selling $2K horse  to a neighbor!!!!

AND...the buyer of that $40k horse and I have become  longtime friends.

Just do your research.......research and research.

I've bought several from Germans. I used someone in U.S. that has the correct contacts
