I think Oprah should be charged with treason for having the audacity to  use her celebrity status to try to promote one candidate over another. Shame, shame, shame on her; she is a disgrace to this country. Same with Hank Williams Junior, Lil Miss Hasselbeck (sp?), Bruce Springsteen, Robert DiNero, Colin Powell, Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh.............what's this world coming to when a citizen has the right to publiclysupport the candidate of his or her choice. Smells like marxism to me.

Don't forget to vote!!!

Bush began calling for more oversight on Freddie and Fannie back in 2001

Horoceo, I am sufficiently objective to acknowledge that there is blame to go around for the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac situation. But a couple of points are relevant:

First, the implosion that we have seen has less to do with those two institutions and more to do with exposure to derivatives that were leveraged to the hilt anywhere from 30 to 50 times the capital of the institutions involved in these derivatives.

Second, from 2001 to 2006, Bush controlled Congress through much of the period. He was very aggressive in seeking the implementation of laws such as the Patriot Act and the hundreds of billions of dollars in tax cuts that he sought. This was in marked contrast to his approach when it came to Fannie and Freddie - and he was AWOL when it came to taking regulatory action to limit exposure to derivatives.

Bush and the Republicans in Congress deserve to be held accountable.

There were not riots in the streets in Denver

RPK, your subtlety overwhelms me.

Are you denying that the Hispanic vote will become increasingly decisive in terms of future election outcomes? Even Bush and McCain realized this and that was the motivation for their support for immigration reform - amnesty in your lingo.

KTF,

So smart yet so biased............Here we have the Bush Administration pushing for reform and the Democrats saying the problems are an "exaggeration" and that there is no problem with Freddie and Fanny.

As Chairman of the Financial Services Committee, Frank has been primarily responsible for blocking attempts to rein in these irresponsible, government-sponsored monstrosities, in return for generous campaign contributions (although Frank personally received less than half as much as Barack Obama). To say Frank has been in bed with the reprobates who instigated our current economic crisis would be putting it literally; another one of his homosexual "partners" was a Fannie Mae executive.............

Blitzen,

In a self contained comfortable, world, you could be right, but it is a bit more complicated and subtle out there, so your celebrity endorsements don't even hint at what I'm talking about. If it was all about celebrity, then freakin' Barbra Streisand would be wearing a tiara for the Democrats.

Once again, you ignore influence, discover; what it is and you might learn something.

I have no doubt it has  zero influence on your personal decision, but I wonder if you don't post a lot of what you post  in hopes that you can sway people not to vote for Obama by playing to their irrational fears.

by keepthefaith on 03 November 2008 - 02:11

RPK, that link  was dated in 2003. Congress was under the control of the Republicans - why did Bush not force the legislation?

But more to the point, the exposure from Fannie and Freddie is not the main problem. The real exposure is in the derivatives which banks and other instituions invested in.  If you don't understand this issue, then you really don't comprehend the current economic crisis - and I am not being condescending. The potential exposure in that area is in the trillions. Bush and the Republican Congress did nothing about this - but then their mantra is that all regulations are bad.

BTW, I notice your deafening silence about the problem that Republicans are having with Hispanics.
