Does the black sable always have the penciling on the toes like true bicolors do?
Is the undercoat of Carol vom Arolser Holz red or black? He is very pretty, but looks to have a redder undercoat....so I'm still confused as to WHAT makes a black sable a black sable.

That's my stud dog, Carol (call name "T"), currently hogging the sofa beside me. He is actually 2x V in the German Sieger Show (Messler and Orschler) even though he doesn't have a drop of show line blood in his entire body. LOL His work is excellent, but he broke a couple of teeth this year, so no more protection competition. He has 100 pts. in FH1. I plan to enter him in the N.A. Championship FH next spring. (The historical domain of the semi-retired dog, ha ha ha) The most unusual thing about him is his big, open gait, which he passes on to his progeny (several titled to SchH1-3, KK1 already, more almost ready for SchH1/Korung)
LOTS more pix of T: http://www.frauengarten.net/Carol1.html
The handsome guy in the scratch pants is Kyle.
Here is one of T's daughters: V3 Walberta vom Arolser Holz, SchH1, FH1, KK1 (actually, I think she has SchH3 now)

Is the undercoat of Carol vom Arolser Holz red or black? Depends on where you pull it out on his body. Some places undercoat is gray, some places tan, some red-brown. Guard hair is three different colors on each hair, from gray to tan or brown and black at the ends. He is very pretty, but looks to have a redder undercoat....Redder on legs, head, neck... so I'm still confused as to WHAT makes a black sable a black sable. Basically, its an overall impresion. Stand back. If the largest area of the sable looks black, there you have it. If a sable looks mostly gray, tan or red, its not a black sable. Most black sables have dark belly hair.
Honestly, he doesn't have green legs. Pic taken with flash..

If you like T, you would have loved my old dog, Carol's great-uncle Pallo. They are almost the same dog as far as work and temperament, but Pallo was more compact, shorter back and heavier. Shelley is infamous for entering good looking gray working dogs in Sieger Shows. At least the crowd remembers the protection work, even if some judges won't look at them. LOL.
