Its very difficult to determine what a sable puppy will look like at maturity. They change nearly every day as pups, and continue to darken with every coat change, often into their 4th and 5th year. My general rule of thumb is that if the belly hair is black, the pup will probably (but not always) be fairly dark.

windwalker18, I know Sue and Gabor at  http://k9imports.com/Litters.htm have a litter sired by (the very handsome) Olek.   There's quite a bit of info about him on their website and I agree, he's a very interesting dog!

Diane Seaman

Red sable are not as previlant as the grey and black sables. I like the dark sables better and the black sable is my favorite.

Dressa and Gauda were out of same parents . Dressa is grey sable and Gauda is red sable.

An alternative to the subjective visual classification system would be genetic:

sable x black or bicolor = black sable (pencilling on toes)

sable x sable = red sable ....................if undercoat is red

sorry, got cut off

sable x sable = tan sable or grey sable or silver sable depending upon undercoat

sable x b/t  = saddle sable

so you could have black sable with pencilling (from cross with black or bi), red/tan/grey/silver from homozygous sable crosses), and saddle sables (easy to confuse with b/t) for sable x b/t or b/r crosses.

Sometimes the genetics would not be definite, but often it is,

jettasmom ............... WOW what a great example of how much they can change.  Had I seen that puppy I would have never thought he would turn that dark.   I have lots to learn in the sable dept.    Thanks

Red Sable

Hmmm does that mean I'm going to have to change my board name? My pups mom was a grey sable, and her father a black, so if you are correct MVF she will be a dark or black sable? Her tummy is quite black, and she has penciling on her feet, but than again so does her dam. Here she is at 7 months.
