What is the process of litter registration with AKC? Who does it, female owner, or male owner? Can you expect a puppy to have pedigree at 8 weeks? Thank you.

Female owner, but either the male owner has to sign the paper form at the time of breeding, or it has to be done via email after whelping. Then the AKC sends the litter registration packet to the breeder. It is possible for the pup to have a registration certificate and pedigree by eight weeks, but not what I would consider normal. It would be possible if the breeder names the litter. I let my people pick their pups name with the litter letter, and I send in the registration application certificate to AKC, and AKC in turn sends the actual papers to the buyer. That way no one changes names. I think my litter had theirs by 11 or 12 weeks for the most part with one exception that the PO lost for 2 months. Once it was sent again it came back to them in like two weeks time, pedigree and all, to Canada. Anyway, not all breeders actually register the individual pups, some just give you the puppy application which you will need to send with $ to AKC to get your registration and pedigree. You will need to discuss the procedure with the breeder in question. They are really the only one who will be able to tell you exactly how THEY do it.
