My son rescued a soft coated wheaton that was from an Amish puppy mill.

Dog came to them having had a check for worms (positive) and chocolate pudding bowel movements.  They were given wormer (don't know which) from the vet and it seemed to get better for a week or so but then went back to the way it had been.  This thing will NOT go away no matter what she and the vet tries.

They've tested for everything but all negative.  I'm wondering if it could even be EPI? But if so, I don't think it would improve any when given wormer.

She's healthy aside from this. Has put on weight has energy and good coat (not great but good).  She's tried different foods with gradual transition and tried rice and hamburger meat.

Any ideas at all?

Thanks,
Dawgs

Dawgs,
Sorry I can't help but check out the thread "Need advice please" posted by Macawpower58 and maybe you can find something in there that you would try.

How long has your son had this puppy?  Weeks, months?  Our girl went through a bout with loose stools and the vet said it could be expected for some time because her little body was purging bad things due to the wormer and that was a side effect.  We fed her a good wetted down kibble with canned pumpkin mixed in.  Really does wonders to firm up the stools.  It's cheap and it works.  We used about 1/3 of a small can for each meal (3 times a day)Stop changing the foods.  Find someone who handles holistic foods and ask questions. Do your homework and find a good food then stick with it.  If your son is switching food on a regular basis it may or may not upset her bowels but how will he know if he keeps changing it.  We went through the same thing, healthy, energetic pup, good coat, gained weight but still had loose stools.  We changed from the crap the breeder told us he fed her (Pedigree) and went to Eagle Pack for large breed pups and have since changed her to Canidaie.  Both of these are fine foods and we haven't fed pumpkin for weeks now.  She is 6 months now and hasn't had a loose stool in months.  Good luck.

I  would test for giardia.  It doesn't show up on regular worming tests.  Giardia is usually caused by standing water and is common in dogs and pups that are kenneled.

Thanks for the responses.  Ok, I'll try to put in more info. to fill in blanks.  She's three years old and they've had her about 8 months.  They started on Eagle Pack then tried Solid Gold after about three months.  I shouldn't have given the impression that there were rapid fire food changes.  So she came to them eating Eukanuba and has had the two different in the intervening 8 mos or so.  I did tell him to try the pumpkin but it didn't help at all which surprised me.
He said the vet had tested for coccidia and giardia with negative results, but I seem to remember having heard that these can sometimes be elusive in tests. Any truth in that?
I only met the dog once, not long after they got her, and she isn't a nervous dog.  That had been one thought at first, nerves I mean, but she was really calm especially considering she had spent most of her life in a confined space without much exposure to  new situations.
Jransom I'll check that thread, thanks. Maybe it'll have some insights also.
It's just a real stumper.

Please let me know what you guys think of the above.

Thanks.

The snap test for giardia can easily miss it but there is a more thorough test.
