as far as OFA - I too have seen dogs who are for HD taken off the OFA lists.

You are right, Kougar, I agree with all you have said - nothing will ever change with her, so why waste the time and energy trying? Too bad for the breed, isn't it? Your area must be flooded with red and black pet GSD's. Yeah, I'm glad too she now knows I'm not her neighbor and competitor LOL.

When I look for an OFA number (or a CERF number) and there is none, I now assume the dog was not eligible. Some breeders use radiologists and I myself would need to see a copy of that report before I bought a dog from them or used one of their dogs at stud. If a breeder can't conform to the very basics of normal hips, elbows and eyes, they should be raising orchids instead of breeding dogs.

what recourse would a buyer have if they found out they were lied to by their breeder and the dogs were not ofa/stamped?

probably! homework rules! lol thanks kouger just got to thinking i would severly be fit to be tied had I took a breeders word and trained for year or so and sunk money into dog to find out the parents werent certified and there was a problem a replacment puppy isnt worth all that heartache if it was all on a deception. I would love the dog no less but i would not have put sar training into a dog with possible problems. Glad i got a good breeder glad I found folks here to tell me to do all the homework it was worth it. know of a sar guy back home breeds labs uncertified his are always breaking down feel so sorry for his dog hip replacments and elbow dysplasia yet he still makes the dog work through it. For all the expense he put into replacing parts on his dog he could have bought good one and trained it but he refuses to see error in breeding the way he does and keeps going? He advertises his dog does sar buy his pups and neglects to tell how much work the dog had done on it.

Oaken - are you a first time GSD owner? Have you done any training, showing or trialing? Do you understand the breeding criteria of the SV??? Do you have any idea of how far in the opposite direction the breeding practices, philosophy and knowledge of the breed this breeder is from the serious breeder who choses to protect and uphold the standard??? I don't chose to argue the term "puppy mill" or "back yard breeder" but this is not a kennel in the accepted sense of hte word, or a breeder whom anyone seriously involved in the breed or the sport would ever refer a customer to for a puppy. This venue is - although it is HARD to believe at times - populated by people who are serious and passionate about the breed. Loving your dogs is not necessarily the best thing for the breed as it leads to kennel blindness, indiscriminate or inappropriate breedings and more dogs ultimately in rescues and shelters. I am on the call list for GSDs in several counties in PA - like Indiana/Armstrong, and Butler...I know what kinds of GSDs get dumped and what breeders are willing to take back dogs. I know what kinds of pups are floating around here in pet homes who make the commitment and are in for 8-10 years of disappointment and work and worry over a dog with an inappropriate temperament.

Bravo, Kougar.

Brandoggy, Why should I have a guilty conscience for telling the truth?

by oaken on 27 July 2005 - 12:07

Kougar, I had a rather lengthy reply that got zapped by lightning...I'll try again..when the storms are over.

by Brandoggy on 27 July 2005 - 18:07

Oaken..not you..should have been more specific
