I was wondering if anyone could tell me any good brands of supplements.  Specifically supplements for hips/joints and how often they should be used.

Also, what exactly is Brewer's Yeast and Garlic for and what would you put in a pregnant female's food?

Thank you,
Haley

For an OTC product this is very good for connective tissue and joints. Knox Nutrajoint plus glucosamine chondroitin & msm.
Best you can do for a pregnant bitch is Folic Acid.

Hokamix, Vertex or Herbal Matrix and Vertex used daily. The Hokamix and Herbal Matrix are both imported from Europe and the quality and reputation of what they can do for a dog is unsurpassed with years of use. We have used this is in our kennels for nearly 13 years and have had excellent success with both. The Vertex is wonderful for many things especially for a pregnant female has been known to nearly double the milk and produces a much higher quality milk.
What is the reason for the yeast and garlic? If it is to prevent fleas or parasites. Grrr-lick is a natural product used for years in Germany and Europe for fleas and Olewo is great for pigment and parasites.

Several GSD people have recommended to me DogZymes Phyto-Flex CCM Plus as a bone, joint, soft tissue supplement.

Link here:  http://www.naturesfarmacy.com

Additionally, also from Nature's Farmacy, I've been recommended to use their "Digestive Enhancer."

Lots of people recommend Salmon oil (as opposed to "fish oil" or cod liver oil).  I use Kronch cold-pressed Salmon oil.

I've heard people say they swear by salmon oil as a "brain food" supplement for their dogs.

All of these are daily supplements added to their food.

I do use salmon oil and the Phyto-Flex CCM Plus.  Haven't x-rayed my 2yo yet, so I'll let you know once his x-rays are done.

You can of course order any of these by mail but the shipping charges tend to be high.  Some places will give you free shipping if you ask and order a lot of stuff (like $300 worth) - it may be worthwhile to find a place you like to order from and have your club members all go together and put in one order to get the free shipping.

I save up and go to a very large dog show each Spring and buy there so I don't pay any shipping, I just take the stuff home with me.  Nature's Farmacy and White Dog Bone Co., which carres NF products, go to shows in my area.  And there's another vendor who carries the Kronch salmon oil.  I think I got it from http://www.petdynamix.com/ last time.  They ran out of the large containers at the show but the woman was very nice and told me if I emailed her she would sell it to me and not charge for shipping.

I've used DogZymes "Ultimate" vitamin-mineral supplement on some of my dogs, but haven't noticed much of a difference from the dogs not on it, so probably won't spend the money on that one again.  Two teaspoons of corn oil in their food seems to be just as, if not more, effective in producing lovely coats.

Brewer's yeast is actually a fungus used as a nutritional supplement.  It contains protein and B-complex vitamins and is also a source of chromium.

Garlic has been used in folk medicines for ages.  "Good for the blood" is usually what is said.  Here's a link to other info; a lot about garlic is anecdotal as opposed to scientific.  Doesn't mean it's not beneficial, I'm just sayin'.

I have been using Brewers Yeast and Garlic now for 40 plus years for the dogs and for a very long time Salmon Oil
I also use Hokamix Joint Powder on the Dogs morning feed, The dogs look well and have unlimited energy so i guess the supplements are not doing them any harm, plus the two dogs Joints were fine so i suppose the Hokamix helps a lot,
Izzy is given it on her morning feed but in a limited amount for her age and weight
Brewers Yeast and Garlic plus Vit C the pigeons have had it for the last 50 years or so it did them no harm and helped them win i am sure so use with confidence folks but as in most things do not over do it
Steve
