But is not all this about bark and hold and keeping the suspect from escaping! True one has a right to protect from bodily injury but when trying to escape is not the dog SUPPOSED TO BITE TO APREHEND? Ther have been PLENTY of people killed in an arrest attempt and no problem it was done in the line of duty! So do you suppose the DOG WAS NOT TRAINED CORRECTLY?

If you google the incident you can see video of the suspects being hauled off to jail, all four of them in a row.

Blek was choked out by one of the criminals while he was attacking the other. Maximum sentence judge.

My condolences to the Handler, his family and his fellow officers.  What a shame and such a waste.  It is a tragedy to lose a K9 in this way.

Keith, some 17 year olds are very large and very schooled in criminal ways, don't be fooled by a suspects age.  Actually, 14 to 17 is the most violent age group in our country.  They lack the ability to understand consequences.  We just had a shoot out recently and a 15 year old juvenile had an assault rifle, the others had shotguns and pistols.  Luckily, they were shooting at other gang members and not us or innocent civilians.

I agree with Prager, Bob, Keith and even Maggie on this one.  MUF, you live in a nice academic world.  Hope you never meet one of these nice young burglars.  MUF, you are way off way base, please get a grip.

If you run and resist arrest, you must expect to be treated more roughly. But you do not give up your right to protect your life or person or the life of your friend.

Please go back and study some law journals.  A citizen can defend themselves from an illegal arrest, not a legal arrest which this was.  Defending yourself from the police in this situation is called assault on a LEO, even the K9.  Yes, there are penalties for killing a Police K9.  A friend of mine's dog was shot apprehending a suspect and got 6 years to serve.  You do not have the right to assault, resist, fight or kill a LEO or a Police K9 to escape arrest.  And you are a teacher, Heaven help us.  I can't comment anymore it is too frustrating.

I responded this afternoon to a home invasion where two armed subjects broke into a house and robbed the mother and her 22 year old daughter at gunpoint.  The subjects fled on foot.  I started a track with my K9 and another officer armed with an M4 as my cover officer.  I coordinated a strong perimeter while en route with the first responding officer as I was 20 minutes away.  The responding officers locked the surrounding area down cutting off escape routes.  The suspects where apprehended 3/4's of a mile away by  a unit on perimeter.  I tracked them the entire way recovering the 2 guns they threw, clothing, and the girls wallet.  It's lucky for them they gave up or I would have  released the dog.  Sorry, MVF law abiding citizens don't run from the police and they certainly don't fight with the police.  I've arrested hundreds of people, very few resist, even fewer run.  None were committing crimes because they were nervous or ran because they were "innocent".

What a horrible death for the brave dog, I hope those guys go away for a very long time.

Jim
