I wouldn't pay him what he paid for her, unless he's really not going for it. Will you have to pay for shipping too?

How overweight is she? Can you call the boarding kennel and ask them some details about her?  How is she to manage? Is she a good eater? Etc. etc.

OK, she's overweight, but I doubt she'll be dysplastic from it by 3 years of age. I mean is she grossly overweight?

free? you would be saving them the boarding costs plus you said they are possibily taking her to the pound.

Don't think she's obese, but not sure. He said she's 80lbs..should be about 65.

Yes; I'm paying all the fees.

I guess it comes down to how much money I'm ok with throwing away if she doesn't xray clear and I have to find a home for her.

Damn George you are good. That is a good point. If they are so quick to get rid of her maybe they don't care about $$.I had a client that had a sweet choc lab i trained.Never heard from them. After 3 weeks of training her off leash and well so many other things the lady tells me they don't want her. They were getting new carpet and landscaping and didn't want her to mess it up!! So she became a service dog. SO maybe these people are like that.Just want to get rid of her.

If it were a pedigree that I knew and loved, and had talked to the breeder, who I knew and loved, and who gave me the rundown on the dog as a puppy,  the last thing I would worry about are hips/elbows.

What is the name of the boarding kennel? It can't hurt to call and ask the help some info about how she acts around them and what her temperament is.

I get the vibe from you that if you don't take her, you will regret it.

I wouldn't pay too much for her. You have to explain to "Lucy" that you are shelling out $$ for shipping and any healthcare she needs and that he should do what is right for the dog and let her come home to you.

Shady Lady, I'm only worried about hips and elbows from a breeding standpoing; I'm not looking for another pet. I can't in good conscience sell a dog w/bad hips and elbows, so I'd like to minimize my investment "just in case." OTOH, I don't want to rob the guy, even though I think the whole situation sucks for the dog. Sold down the river for shedding and being a typical working dog!!!

What would be so hard as to take her to the vet and get her hips and elbows done before you offer any money. that should give you some time to check out her temperment as well?

just a thought

Jenni,

Offer to pay full cost for the vet to do a full assessment, bloodwork., and Preliminary Xrays(sent to you digitally) that OFA will accept. But you can generally read them close to what OFA will. If not I can or im sure others on here can as well. I knwo its a few hundred to do all of this but ide rather piss away a few hundred than 1-2K.

Once you pass that then your gamble will be down to mentality and you have to consider if any flaws are genetic or enviromental and decide if she repairable. that is if there are any issues.

That is how I would go about it if i happened to end up in your shows jenni.

Also I think its a bad idea to call the boarding kennel as most kennel hands are ignorant.

I realize that you are looking  at hips from a breeding standpoint. I'm totally with you on that. But it's still a very good educated risk since you know the pedigree! You get what I am saying? It's not like this is an unknown dog and you have no idea what the ancestors'  and siblings hips scores were.

OK, so you don't rob the guy, but the dog will be in the pound or at a GSD rescue home, if he doesn't find someone to buy her. He'll get no money for her then. Does he have deep enough pockets to keep paying her boarding fee every day?

He has to realize what her value is to the average person. The pedigree won't mean anything to them, unless he hypes it up to sell them on her.  She has no or minimal training, and is overweight, etc.

Has he told you what he wants for her?
