You've all been very helpful. Just needed clarification on a few of my "toss ups" in my head. Thank you all so much.

He got very pissy when I brought up taking her to the vet for xrays. I get the idea he doesn't want to mess around with that. I'm willing to take the risk rather than have him say "screw it" and dump her somewhere.

I would speak to the owners not the original breeder. If they are boarding her and she is NOT in the home chances are they just want rid of her no matter what they payed for her(I have seen a lot of expensive dogs wind up in rescues on this board in just the last couple of months alone just ask MGSD rescue) Wasn't the last one from Sapphire shepherd 2,500a pup) I would talk to the owners and ask what THEY are asking for her and then would make a offer on the dog IF she passed OFA at your (JENNI78)expense if not she is worthless to you and you could offer to help find her a forever home as a pet I would rather just be out the 200.00 for OFA then pay for an extremely over priced pet.Business is business. i still say free. you are saving them the shedding and money on boarding an unwanted dog. you dont want to rip him off, screw that what is he doing to her just basically throwing her away.

Jenni,

I would risk the money to have someone from the boarding kennel take her to a vet, get her microchipped, and have her xrayed hips and elbows.

Is the breeder that you know near where the dog is?

Filll out the paperwork as it will be if you buy her.

If it's good news, send it in when she is in your name.

If you have some concerns about the process, call OFA.

You probably already know how to do this.

Good luck,

Michele

It doesn't hurt to make a 'low-ball' offer, what's the worst they can do? Say no, then you try again! Offer a couple hundred dollars, if they say 'no' up the ante a little until they bite. Or say 'I'll offer more if you get her hips x-rayed', so they understand that you'll be out of pocket if she flunks....I don't think a lot of people even think of the expense that many of us just consider normal with our dogs...to them it's just a dog, only to the vets for shots, neuter or injury, you know? Just saying, I don't think it would be awful to even ask if they would like you to 'help them out' by taking her, & give them a little 'consideration' for the paperwork. They don't sound much like dog people to me! JMHO jackie harris

Jackie, they're not dog people. You got it.

Ok, I'm paying them $500, and paying all expenses- crate, vet, health cert, etc. I will let you all know what happens.

The breeder doesn't have her; he just thought I might be interested and was trying to help me get a good dog inexpensively. He would take her if she were homeless.
