"Good intentions don't count for anything." WHY WOULD THEY???
Ok, done, for real, there's no point...that just stuck out at me.

Sorry DDR, people saw what you did and so did I. You are so sick I doubt you remember anyone who you dealt with. No one in their right mind would EVER make such an accusation like this that could not be backed up. The evidence was also presented in court, and despite what you want to write now to excuse your sick behavior, you and your husband were convicted and were not allowed to own dogs for some years. Anyone who wants the records can contact the court system.

Puppy mill - 64 German Shepherds seized
Gardena, CA (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Mar 3, 1999
County: Los Angeles

Disposition: Convicted

Defendants/Suspects:
» Gregory Bartmess
» Janice Bartmess

Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

Gregory and Janice Bartmess owners of South Bay Pet Inn, 18116 La Salle Avenue were booked Saturday at Gardena jail on suspicion of cruelty to animals. They were later released on their own recognizance.

Veterinarians in Carson are working to save 64 German shepherds that were living in squalid conditions at the Gardena kennel. Most of the animals were kept in tiny crates that were filled with excrement.

An officer was called to the kennel because of loud and continuous barking coming from the South Bay Pet Inn. Many of the dogs were living in carriers that were just 2 x 3 feet wide.

"They couldn't move around for exercise. Three was no food or water in most of the cages. Inside the living room of the house was a female German shepherd with five little puppies in one of those carriers."

Janice Bartmess denies the allegations that were made on Thursday. She thinks the problems of the kennel are being exaggerated. "I say it's exaggerated and there's a lot of lying going on. I'm not saying everything was perfect. I think the situation between my side and what they are saying is absolutely bipolar ...."

An emaciated German shepherd was found in the front yard, the dog was in a small dog carrier. The animal was so ill that veterinarians had to euthanize it.

They then found dogs in the backyard and in the garage living in horrible, filthy conditions.

"The ground was covered with feces over a foot high in some places."

Carson shelter manager said the problem with most of the dogs was, they were very hungry.

"Right now they are doing pretty good. We've been feeding them regularly and checking them regularly. They are in a lot better shape than they were in Saturday."

Bartmess said she bought the kennel 4-1/2 years ago to breed dogs for sale. The business has not done well and costs her approximately $10,000 a year. The more dogs, the more problems they were having trying to take care of them.

"This is kind of like a dream that turned into a nightmare. We've never made a living off the dogs, I don't know who could."

The dogs will be kept at the shelter until the case has an outcome. Bartmess said she doesn't know if she wants the dogs back.

Bartmess also had criticism for the animal control department which never offered her any help.

According to court records, on July 18, 2000, Gregory and Janice Bartlett each pleaded guilty to one of eight counts of violating Penal Code Section 597t, mistreatment of a confined animal, a misdemeanor. 30 counts of cruelty to an animal were dismissed as part of the plea agreement. On October 19, 2000, they were each sentenced to one day in jail, and a $200.00 restitution fine. Both were placed on 3 years' formal probation and prohibited from owning animals during that period.

Ironically, the other hoarder I know of also blamed her husband for not feeding the dogs. My friend was staying there and he said he'd feed them, since he found out they hadn't eaten in a long time, and she told him no, it was her husband's job!!!! What kind of mentality is this?! Same person had a dog die in his kennel and didn't know it for a few days. Yet, SPCA has had zero luck in convicting her. If DDR was convicted, it was pretty bad.

Well I am sooo glad I am here to learn from your mistakes, cause I would have never realized by my own rational thought process, that  I might be slightly over my head, should I try to care for so many dogs. I'm SUPER glad you shared your intelect here and possibly saved many of us from going there.

Holy shit! At times, 4 dogs drove me apeshit and still with 2, when everything is not zen in my little world, they are a PITA to work, feed, clean up after in the wind and driving rain, when I am sick, tired or just don't feel like it. No way in hell would I want or try to take on 10 dogs, let alone 50, even though I'm at home all day right now. Even with my husbands full time help, how can 2 people properly care for, let alone minimaly excersize so many? Training, socializing, fixing temp issues...not even going to go there.

With so many, they would have to be crated and rotated. I can't afford 50 something 10x10 kennels, my shoulder can't throw a ball enough times to play with all 50 dogs, especially after dishing out 50 meals, picking the bowls back up, cleaning water buckets and picking up/hosing down shit, for 50 dogs! This is a job for a well staffed facility and most facilities don't even live up to my expectations.

DDR if you couldn't see ahead far enough, to realize your shortcomings and human limitations, you are CRAZY! I don't feel sorry for you, I feel sorry for the dogs that had to live under your care, or lack of. Rational/normal people have lives outside their dogs. You had a family and full time job yourslef, how many hours exist in YOUR day?

Your a perfect example of why people are anti-breeder, why Hodie gets pissed, why Jen, I and many others, talk ourselves OUT of breeding our dogs.

Well, to be fair, I do breed, or at least have bred 2 litters total. But you're correct, I talk myself out of breeding 90% of the litters people propose to me.

I have a lot of dogs, by my standard. I have 7- 2 are available for adoption. When I get down to 5 it will feel like a day off. To do justice to them takes many hours. It means getting up by 5 and not going to bed until very late, when they have all had ample time and exercise. I decided after having the baby, that I can no longer do justice to more than that, because I have a few less hours every day, so while it killed me not to keep one from my import litter, I didn't. You have to be realistic. If you can't honestly say that the dog in your possession isn't better off there than anywhere else, you need to take a step back and change some things.

DDR - you disgust me.

There is no excuse in the world for what you made those dogs endure.
