someone must be low on cash lately or something.  There seems to be an inordinate amount of pimping of this abomination on a german shepherd board lately.

I too was always a diehard GSD fan. I've had them all my life- both WL and SL. I always said there was no other dog for me...until through a chain of events we adopted a Shiloh rescue named Josey- unplanned I might add. When my friend just about begged us to adopt him or at least foster him I told my friend that I wasn't interested, for more than one reason. One of the reasons was due to all the negative things I'd heard about them hear on this board, plus giant breeds never intrigued me. I was very skeptical.  Long story short, my friend was very persistent and once my husband saw Josey...the rest is history. All I can say is there is a lot of misinformation out there about both these dogs and the breed founder.

Yes, those of you who think these dogs aren't protective are incorrect. Just yesterday our yardman walked into our pool area unannounced. Our Shiloh, Josey, who was not within view of the yard man, heard the man enter, immediately barked and ran up to him. He got in the man's face and wouldn't let him move. The guy thankfully froze in place and I ran out and called Josey away from him. Josey meant serious business and I believe if the guy would've moved he'd gone after him.  Josey would not make it in Schutzhund, but I know he would protect me with his life if necessary. Our friends were here to witness the whole thing and were shocked to see this side of Josey. Josey is also a Therapy dog. He is very well-balanced with good nerves. He is a wonderful family pet, with many of admiral qualities of a GSD, such as intelligence, loyalty and protectiveness, but without the high drive and high energy.  That said, there are Shilohs that are excellent SAR dogs and they make fantastic service dogs. They are NOT just furry rugs.

I have said this before. If you don't like the Shiloh Shepherd, that is fine as there are breeds I don't care for as well, but to have such hatred for the breed and founder is beyond me. I just don't get it.  Also, to call a breed that has been in development for over 20 years a designer breed or mutt is unfair and innaccurate. All breeds started out as mixture of something or another, including the GSD! After 20 years of the development of the GSD, were they still mutts? Absolutely not...just something to think about.

Starrchar, if the Koolaid-drinkers would not keep up the ridiculous hyperbole, the nagative comments would not arise. But, the shameless and constant marketing of these dogs as some sort of "improvement" of the gsd is offensive and therefore engenders the type of response that always arises. And, YES, MONEY seems to always be behind the hyperbole.

I don't hate her.. I just don't really care for her work!

She is not my type of a breeder.

And just notice how many drank the Koolaid and signed on this forum in the last few days to engage in their defensive bs. Oh well, this happens every time the Shiloh issue comes up...

Mystere, I was not aware of the constant marketing of these dogs- no more than any other breed. If you feel that these dogs are being marketed as something as "better" than the GSD I can see why it would upset you. I don't see it the same way as you, but that is ok. From my perspective the Shiloh is a different breed than a GSD, a breed that has been developed for a different purpose.  They are not trying to compete with the GSD. I still love the GSD with all my heart- probably as much as you do. But, I am saddened as to what has happened to the breed regarding the health issues and the extreme structure of many of the dogs. Still, if/when I want to get back into Schutzhund the GSD will be my only choice. Right now there is no time for that in my life. I hope we can just agree to disagree on this matter.

GSDpack- I understand your perspective as there are quite a few breeds I don't care for and there was a time in my life that a Shiloh would not have been my cup of tea too! My life is different now- I am a full-time caregiver for my elderly mom. A working dog requires a job, which takes a good deal of time and effort on the part of the owner, so it wouldn't be fair for me to own a drivey GSD right now. I do have  a GSD, but she is a rescue and she is pretty laid back.  Life changes and people change. If someone would've told me 10 years ago that I'd have a long coated laid back GSD and a Shiloh, I would've said there was no way possible it could happen. Who knew? I do respect the opinions of other people when it comes to their taste and preference and I appreciate those who do the same for me. Thank you.

BTW, both GSDpack and Mystere, I love the dogs on your avatars. Gorgeous!

Thank you, he things so also... he is full of himself. I dont like what happened to the Boxer breed here in America, I cant stand most of the Dobermans, Bullydobedane and blue nose pitbul that looks like a bulldog on steroids and people pay 3 grand for.. oh well If somebody gives me one as a rescue I will not judge, I just would never PAY $$ for it. That is all..

When I was young, we had a billy goat that would attack anyone who entered "his" pasture, he also had 2 ears, 4 legs and a somewhat bushy tail. Despite these amazing similarities to the GSD, he was not a GSD.

Maybe after 100 or so years of breeding shilohs, the promoters of this "new" breed can speak of them on their own merits, without claiming them to be GSD.

SS, I wish you the best in your chosen path. Life is too short to worry about what others think anyway.

As for me there is not really anything else I can add to what P.T. Barnum has already said, so I'll shut up.

mystere, you seem to be so consumed about "money" WHY?  If you check out our websites you can see that the ISSR produces less then 300 pups per year -- among ALL of the breeders!!  Nobody is trying to sell Shiloh's HERE!!  Most of my pups are presold for 3-8 months PRIOR TO BIRTH!

How many GSD pups do you think get registered by the AKC every year??  THOUSANDS!  I did an article about 20 years ago What are we breeding for? You should look it up!!

What I am concerned about is the fraud pups that PRETEND to be "shilohs" -- we have thousands of those out there -- thanks to the GSD folks that allow their dogs to be bred to those fakes -- THANKS A LOT!

That's why I came here -- to educate those that CARE about their GSD lines!!  Why don't you stop spewing forth crap & study  the FACTS! http://www.shilohshepherds.com/realQuestionsHonestAnswersFromTheShilohShepherdBreedFounder.htm

So i dont have to do the reading- I would like to ask one question.

What is the original intended purpose and projected coarse for this combination of breeds?
