If you are not interested in small dogs, just ignore this message.

Have you thought about getting a second breed or smaller breed ?

I used to be involved in German Shepherds (SchH et al.) which we loved but due to back problems and a Military move to the United Kingdom we were forced to consider downsizing.

My new breed is a primitive rabbit hound from portugal. They are easy to keep, hardy, fun dogs. These are not Foo Foo's...they are hardy working dogs.

They are Portuguese Podengo Pequeno's (small rabbit hunters from Portugal.) They resemble a small Terrier but they are hardy hunting hounds.

Our breed club team has been working very hard over the last 5 years and now the breed will be going into AKC Misc. Classes in Jan. 2011.

We are hopeful that we'll be able to get out of Misc. and into regular classes within the next 1-2 years.

Now is the time to get in on the ground floor plus our breed desperately needs some experienced breeder / AKC exhibitors to help us launch this breed properly.

To learn more about this small hardy breed that former GSD breeders have taken a fancy to, go to our club site:

If you think you might be interested, let me know. We'd love to have you join our project!

Maybe one day as a pet but am no breeder so breeding is well out of my hands :)

Good luck with the breed and will be keeping a look out for these lovely looking dogs

If I were to go for another breed other then a GSD (would be hard to do) I would go for an Austrailian Kelpie. They are like a GSD with shorter hair and the drive of a border collie. They haven't been screwed up by the AKC yet. Also I would(and look forward to getting in the future) a Czech Wolfdog. I couldn't get a small dog..

I'll wait until they make a movie about them. Then I'll start breeding them. Gotta get the hype if you wanna make it big time.$$$ I mean hell, if I'm gonna breed something I don't know or like, I better make some dough!

For those people that can't take on a second breed now, please consider joining our club.

Part of our mission of launching this breed is to build our membership roster, provide judges education, run meet the breed educational booths etc.

It's a tremendous about of work...definately a labor of love.

"The Podengo comes in three sizes that are not interbred - small (Pequeno), medium (Médio) and large (Grande)" - is that true?

read it on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portuguese_Podengo

Sorry i just relised that this post is directly aimed at "small (Pequeno)"

I like the larger look myself but the small ones are cute

LOL, Sorry Sam. This is no money maker

They only cycle about once a year.
Small litters, more males produced than females.
It's a rare breed for a reason

Actually, there have been several movies made using the Portuguese Podengo (lake house, Roxane, some dolphin movie etc.) however it's the larger size Medio.
They also come in large (GSD size) or Grande which are used to Hunt Deer and Boar.
Tough dogs !

We have all 3 sizes in the US.
We had AKC split the small (Pequeno) from the Medio/Grandes in July 2009 to a separate breed.
