The A.K.C. will accept all purebred dogs (recognized by the A.K.C. as being a separate dog breed) as long as they were registered to an F.C.I. - recognized kennel club in their country of origin. For Germany it is the VDH for all purebred dogs born there, or a specialty kennel club such as the S.V..
For italy there is the Ente Nazionale della Cinofilia Italiana as the F.C.I. - recognized kennel club. There may be separate recognized clubs (similar to Germany's S.V.) but I do not know who they are.
Past this; the important thing is to have the proper documents for registration. For the S.V. - registered dogs, the required document is the Deckbescheinigung. I do not know what the Italian kennel club calls their registration form.
By the way; the A.K.C. is the only F.C.I. - recognized kennel club in the United States, so even with all of our complaints; it remains the "only game in town". You can find the rules and forms required at their website: http://www.akc.org/index.cfm . I do know that all foreign-born dogs and bitches must now have a DNA test result with the A.K.C. even if they have it already with their home country's kennel club.

Even if you have an Imported dog with a DNA by his/her Foreign Registration Organization...If you want to register a litter of pups from them with the AKC....Then...YES...you must re-do the DNA test with the AKC...
You CAN register a Foreign Dog with AKC without doing a AKC DNA test...
You only need to have a DNA test done with AKC if you want to register a litter by them...Male or Female...
They want their share of the pie...
I think that if AKC accepts a Foreign Registration that they accept everything that that brings with it...

Bob, Thanks for the information regarding the necessity for DNA proof if a litter is produced. I knew the DNA rule change was relatively recent and presumed it was mandatory for all dogs and bitches. It has been a few years since I made an import hence I did not read the fine details of the new rule.

yes, they accept any registration from FCI (recognized) registered dogs.
You may be required to provide proof of transfer and ownership from the country received from.
hope this helps,

If you go to the AKC web-site you'll find a list of all the Foreign Rgistration Agencies...
I also think that somewhere AKC states that you MUST send in the Original Registration with your application for registering a Foreign Dog...But this is not the case...You ONLY need to send in a photo copy of the Foreign Dog's Registration...and any other information that AKC requires from that particular agency...
Different Foreign Registrations require differnet information for AKC registration...Check on the AKC web-site or ask someone at AKC...
