So to be cautious, during this period we just proceed with extra caution.
Better to be safe than sorry.
Really, who knows what to believe? ....Studies? ......Based on what?
Does anyone really know what goes on in the mind of a puppy?
Better to err on the side of caution, works for us

sg do you even have a dog? you don't breed,don't sell and don't train. how did you get all your knowledge. i am not trying to be a wise ass either. i 'd just like to know.
i never did trust anyone who was afraid to give their name. must have something to hide???

I would assume until proven otherwise, that anyone who seems to have a lot of knowledge and doesn't give their name (as MOST of the posters on here don't) that they have good reason....gov't (most common reason I have found w/my buyers and friends), etc.
Guess I'm just not a very suspicious person. Perhaps that's why I don't get this "fear period" thing either.

Some intrusive
governments in their infinite wisdom ( PA was mentioned here by their gov employee)
will terrorize breeders selling or even advertising pups before 8 weeks of age. Actually, if you really, really, really care, the 8th week is according to most studies
the worst age to send the pup on a plane and remove pups from the litter. In short during that period pups learn fear and what ever scares them will be scary to them( to lesser or greater degree) for the rest of their life. I personally believe that 7 weeks is the best time for the pup to bond with his/hers new owner and then at 9th weeks of age.
However truth be told I personally have not seen any problems in any age from from 7 weeks and up.
Thus Hans says 7 weeks and up.
Science says 8th week is the worse.
Intrusive Governments in some areas where I would not want to live, says not earlier then 8th week is the best, or we put you in prison.
If you are prudent and ship your dog then 9 weeks is good.

P.S. Here is a question. Who, or what kind of a person, wakes up in the morning and decides to push through a law , that if a citizen sells, NAY( !!!) let me correct myself ; advertises pups for sale, at earlier age then 8 weeks, will be, controlled by "jack booted thugs with guns" and punished by fine and dungeon and will have a stigma of cruelty for selling pups at 7 weeks ?

Having only reared Puppies up from weaning from the mother for the span i have kept dogs some 60 years I want the Pup to come to me at 6 to 7 weeks of age but no earlier than 6 weeks old For me that is the age to start the getting to know each other bit.
If you get a Pup at 10 to 12 weeks old then i think a valuable 3 to 5 weeks has been lost in the early bonding which i think is very important indeed

I personally think too much is made of this "fear period." I have seen glimpses of what you're all referring to, but take it as natural/normal puppy develpment phases and not something to be stringently dealt with via alteration of daily life.

I've never seen a fear period or signs of it. The term is ridiculous. How many scientific studies are done by real life dog trainers or handlers? I find it difficult to give validity to such reports. People are quick to believe what others tell them instead of relying on their own reasoning capacity . I find this fact comforting.
