 RS,yes
Not all backyard breeders are bad. My mom said the best GSD she ever had was from a breeder that didn't do health certifications. Just because the dogs being bred aren't health certified doesn't make the breeder a BYB. Back than,(1982) it wasn't such a big deal. However, in today's times, its all about the $$$$$$. The more certifications or titles, the higher the puppies are priced, because the same issues can be produced by certified or titled parents as those that are not. JMO

However, each person or breeder has to do what he feels is best for him. He has no one to answer to or satisify but himself. So really there is no right or wrong way. Its just a matter of opinion. JMO

Not that I disagree, but your mom isn't exactly Breed Warden material. In fact, what else can she say? The pedigree of the pup she bred doesn't have a title or health testing in the first few generations.

I  prefer to stack the deck in my favor which means going to a breeder who knows what they are doing, works, titles and breed surveys their dogs, and has a proven track record.  Also I prefer to go to a breeder who actually knows, understands, desires and breeds the kind of dog I like.  Plus we all know that no one can guarantee a pup won't have disqualifing faults or structural issues, what the guarantee does is tells you what the breeder will do in case your pup ends up with disqualifing faults, sturutural issues, whatever.  Most guarantees offer replacement not refund.  Last thing in the world I want is to go back to a breeder who has no depth of proven quality in their kennel for a replacement puppy.   They had one nice litter that didn't pan out  - and now what kind of shit am I going to get stuck with from them?

Since I know how hard concientious breeders who jump through all the hoops work for their puppy dollars, these are the breeders I  always steer anyone towards who asks me about buying a puppy.  I tell them to run as fast and as far away as they can from shady breeders who try to tell you their pups would be great for this or that, but don't do shit with their own dogs, and those who cut corners and try to ride on the coattails of other breeders.

I think this was an accidental litter. I have spoken with Jean several times because I live in her city. She has pointed me in the correct direction time and time again for health checks, xrays, vets, etc. She also pointed me to the club I am a member of. She has done a great deal for me since moving here 10 months ago.
As far as breeding underage dogs without titles and certs, all you have to do is look at the rest of her breeding stock. Titled, health checks, currently working dogs. I also see her breedings almost every weekend at my club. Excellent temperment, health, working ability, etc. Just because an oops happens doesn't mean they are irresponsible breeders.

I do think this was an "oops" as I stated early on.

While not all her breeding stock is titled, I do believe health certs are done.

I could be wrong, but I believe this was an accidental breeding that didn't even occur on the breeder's property, and the breeder is simply stepping in as the breeder of the sire and dam to ensure the welfare of the puppies.

I don't know the breeder or know nothing about their dogs (so I won't comment on them), but you would have to be blind to miss their billboards driving on a highway (I5)...It looks like a big commercial breeding facility.

They have a billboard on I-5?  No shit?  WHERE?!?!

Did they buy a new house since I was there last?
They're breeding out of their home.  They're far from commercial, I promise.

Red Sable, I too have an awesome dog that was a rescue....funny thing is he turned out to have a decent pedigree and was related to my K9 (small world).

I have seen so much crap bred these days and the good dogs are fewer and fewer.  When I see what "reputable" breeders are breeding and the inbreeding going on, it is sickening.

Too bad so many buyers don't expend a little of the energy to research their potential pup as the good ethical breeders expend to do the job right.

Mudwick,
I5 corridor (east side) between Olympia and Tacoma.

As I stated before I don’t know them and I don’t comment on them. I just saw the billboard and as soon as I used the posted on this thread link, I recognized the logo… Is there another breeder nearby that has the same name that advertizes on I5 billboards and I am wrong? If so I appologize.
